Palermo church marriage

Post by cj11788 »

Hello,

The attached 1698 marriage for Antonio Piccino and Paula is from the Palermo Cathedral. I have a couple of questions on it.
-I don't see either parents listed. Do You?
-What is Paula's last name?
-Antonio is from Carini but where is Paula from? Looks like a hospital?
-Why are there two certificates for them? 163 and 164.

Thanks,

Chris

Hi Chris
No parents given for either.

Paola Tabbito was from Palermo, daughter of the Great Hospital-I believe that was a charitable institution in Palermo; possibly she had been a foundling, but I also see that there was a separate foundling institution in Palermo, so I can't say for sure.

The first record appears to be a marriage publications record about the banns of marriage -banns on the 20th and 27th of April with no impediments detected. The second record appears to be the actual church marriage record with the marriage taking place in the church on the 29th.

Thanks Erudita

Another question for you. Is Bartolomea the Italian name for Barbara?

Hi Chris
Always happy to help.

The name Barbara is also Barbara in Italian. There is no connection between that Italian first name and the first name Bartolomea. Barbara was a Christian martyr who was sainted.
