Hello my friends,
I have some questions about this act and I am hoping that those of you with more experience with this time period can help me out.
basically - WHAT is going on here? I understand that Emanuele was a minor and both of his parents were deceased and therefore unable to give their consent to the marriage. My understanding is that all of these other people were there to give their consent to the marriage, but why was a 19 year old tailor being accompanied by all of these important people?
I know that getting a definitive answer is pretty much impossible, but my hope is that some of you who have been reading these documents for years may have seen this enough times to have some insight.

In another matter, this document mentions the names of the earliest Di Bello's that I have found. I have only found one sibling for Marco, so now I imagine it's because his parents' died early. This document is from Andria, because his wife Maria was from there. Some of their children were also born in Adria, and then some in Trani when they relocated there, where Marco was born.
What's really been bothering me is that I have found many Di Bello's in Trani while sifting through all of the records, but I am having difficulty linking any of them to this family, which seems a bit strange to me. Do you think that I might find more information if I look into the other people mentioned in this record?
Thanks,
Julie

Hi Julie,
for an explanation, you might want to read something (in Italian, I'm sorry) from the Napoleonic code
https://napoleonaigle.wordpress.com/201 ... atrimonio/
Particularly, article 160 says minors less than 21, and with no parents, nor grandparents, can't marry without consent of the Family Council.
In 1817, French had lost control of Southern Italy, but probably rules remained more or less the same.
About the Family Council, it is mentioned in the Two Sicilies Civil Code at article 328:

Hi Pippo.
Thanks so much for this. I read the code in Italian and the "family council" is mentioned several times. I found the one about a tutor for an unborn child if the husband is dead to be quite amusing. I didn't see anything about how the family council was chosen.
I googled everything I could think of in French and in English, but I can't find anything about who made up the family council. This question interests me. In the act above, there was a priest, a property owner, and a bunch of other people. How do they become the council?
Anyway, I'll keep searching and I"ll ask my French husband when he gets home if he knows anything about this.
thanks again, PIppo
