1. Was Nunziata Valenza born in San Biaggio, the home of her parents, Rosaria Antista and Cosimano Valenza ?
2. In this birth record, Lucia Motta, midwife, reported the birth of the newborn, Nunziata Valenza. Have you ever found a birth record with a notation why the father did not appear to report the birth of his newborn ?
Thanks for your help.
Merry Christmas to all.

Have you ever found a birth record with a notation why the father did not appear to report the birth of his newborn ? Yes, often it does tell you why the father hasn't presented the baby but I've read through the record and I can't see any indication written as to why the baby was presented by the midwife. Often it is because either the father was away from the town, or because of illness.)
Thanks for your help.

Since the father was a shepherd (pastore), he may have been away participating in the Transumanza. This was a twice a year migration, through private lands, of huge numbers of livestock, but primarily sheep, being moved by shepherds from high grounds in the hills (which was the spring pasture) to winter pastures nearer the coast, and vice versa. When participating in this event, the shepherd could be away from his home for as much as two weeks. Therefore some shepherds were away from their native towns for the births of their chidlren, and some themselves died in other towns, while away participating in this event.
In case this is of interest to anyone, in this particular record, it was the midwife who produced the two witnesses present for her declaration of the birth and presentation of the infant.
Also the word Rua is used in place of the word Via in this record. The town of birth was Geraci Siculo and the birth took place at the home of the parents.
