Welcome to the forum! :)

Here are the main details, as I see them. The writing is really small and when it's blown up it goes out of focus so have done my best. If these records are online, it would be really helpful if you post the link to the online record. It makes it much easier for us to work with.

Marriage No 59: Enrico Garattoni and Maria Bisognani

Sant'arcangelo: 28 July year?
Groom: Enrico Garattoni, celibe (single), 24 yo, Cordaro (Rope Maker), residing Sant'arcangelo, son of deceased Pietro, bracciante (day labourer), who resided in S.Arcangelo when living, and son of Cecilia Bertozzi, bracciante, residing S. Arcangelo

Bride: Maria Bisognani, nubile (single), 21 yo, donna di casa, residing in S. Arcangelo, daughter of Lorenzo, bracciante, residing S.Arcangelo and of an unknown woman.

Re: Marriage Publication translation please

Thank you. This link is much easier to read.

At the bottom of the record it mentions the documents that were presented in order for the marriage to take place. These are known as "Allegati" or "Processetti" and in earlier records can contain a wealth of information. The documents mentioned here that were presented were the birth extracts of the bride and groom (mandatory), the death extract of Pietro Garattoni, father of the groom.

Cecilia Bertozzi, mother of the groom gave her consent. All that were present signed the document (at the bottom) except Cecilia Bertozzi who was illiterate. The other names that you see there are the witnesses who were present, along with the official Francesco Franchini.

Left column are written the dates that the marriage banns took place, which were affixed to the door of the town hall:

31 July 1904
7 August 1904
11 August 1904

BTW: This record is not the Marriage Record, it is the Marriage Pubblication. It would be good take a look at the Marriage Record as well. I'm sorry I don't currently have time to look for this. If you can locate it, post it here and I'll take a look later.

The marriage info doesn't give any new info that I can see. In fact, as often is the case, the Pubblication gives more information. I always like to look for both records because I find the Pubblication sometimes gives dates of deaths for any parents and sometimes it gives their ages as well. In this case it gives their occupations so that's the bonus there. I've just extracted the vital info below, as a guide, which might help you with interpreting future marriagerecords.

Marriage Record No 67: Enrico Garattoni and Maria Bisognani

Sant'Arcangelo: 10 October 1904
Groom: Enrico Garattoni, Celibe, 24 yo, Cordaro, born and residing Sant'arcangelo, son of the deceased Pietro, who resided in S. Arcangelo when living, and of Cecilia Bertozzi, who resides in S. Arcangelo.

Bride: Maria Bisognani, nubile, 21 yo, donna di casa (domestic duties), born and residing S. Arcangelo, daughter of Lorenzo (Bisognani), who resides in S.Arcangelo, and of an unknown woman.

Marriage Processeti: Enrico Garattoni e Maria Bisognani

Post by AngelaGrace56 »

I've made a start on translating the processeti documents:

Page 1: The cover sheet:

This gives you the names of the bride and groom, the number of the marriage act (No 67), and where it appears in the 1904 records (Part 1). Then it tells you how many documents are included (4 ie quattro). At top left it gives you the year the marriage took place (1904). (I'm sorry I've gone blank, top right No 76???)

Page 2 and Left side of Page 3:

Extract of Birth Act No 41: Enrico Garattoni
Santarcangelo: 8 February 1880

Appearing was Pietro Garattoni, 45 yo (1835), Colono (tenant farmer), living in this town. He reported that at 7 am, on 6 of the current month, (so born 6 February 1880), in the house in San Michele, No 682, from Cecilia Bertozzi, his wife, a colona, living with him, was born a male baby, who he presented to the official, and gave the names Enrico, Andre, and Lazzaro

Be aware, especially as you go back further, that with Italian given names, you don't actually have first, second, third names. Enrico could have gone by any of those three names but I think in this case we can safely say he went by Enrico.

Here's one more:

Page 3 Right side and Page 4 left side:

Extract of Birth Act No 9: Maria Bisognani
Santarcangelo: 10 January 1883

Appearing was Lorenzo Bisognani, 24 yo, Colono, living in this town. He reported that at 3 am, on 7 of the current month (so born 7 January 1883) in the house in S. Michele, No 733, from his union with a woman, who was not married, not related to him, or similar, which would prevent the recognition of the baby; was born a baby girl who he presented and gave the names Maria and Pasqua.

There are just two more records left:

Page 4 right side - Certificate of the Published Publications which you could post and have translated.
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903 ... at=1150457

Page 5: Death Record No 18 (Part 2 - Supplementary Records) Pietro Garattoni

He died in a hospital out of town so that's why it appears in the supplementary records. His parents were Francesco Garattoni and Maria Cinarelli. He was born circa 1834. It doesn't seem to say how he died. Maybe post this separately and ask for a translation.

WOW!!!!

The information you all have provided is outstanding. It is everything I was hoping for and more that I could have expected. Thank you all for your help.

I'm sure that this will lead to many more inquiries in the future.

One thing for clarification.

The record that I post is more of an "announcement" of the marriage? It appears that the actual record is in the files named as "Allegati (matrimoni) 1904-1907" film # 7976439 in this case.

Thanks again

Grazie G :D

This is great! You must have read my mind.

So he died in the town of Imola, in Ospitale e Manicomio di S. Maria della Scaletta – at 11 am on 16 July 1888 as a result of "enterite cronica" (chronic enteritis).

Manicomio – Psychiatric Hospital/Asylum – I "guess" it's possible that he found himself here due to delirium which often accompanies these types of illnesses?

You are very welcome for the help, and please do keep asking questions if you need clarification.

Yes, you will often find a copy (extract) of the marriage record amongst the allegati but it won't usually be the original marriage record - it will be a transcript of the original record which sometimes have errors/omissions so it's always best to find the original marriage record. If you are looking for the original marriage record, look for "matrimoni". When you see "allegati (matrimoni)" these are the attachments/supporting documents that were presented so that the marriage could take place, and will include transcribed copies of the marriage banns and marriage record.

I found the following which may help to explain things for you. I'm not sure whether it is still online or not but it was provided by Family Search:

"Marriage Banns [pubblicazioni, notificazioni, memorandum]. You may find records that show a couple’s intent to marry in addition to or instead of actual marriage records. The following are various records that may have been created to show a couple’s intent to marry.

Proclamation, allegations, or banns [notificazioni, pubblicazioni, memorandum].These notifications were made a few weeks before a couple planned to marry. The couple may have been required to announce their intended marriage to give other community members the opportunity to raise any objections to the marriage. If one member of the bridal party lived elsewhere, banns were posted in that community also. If you know that a marriage took place but cannot find it in the marriage records of the community, search the marriage banns. It may be posted there and lead you to the community where the marriage actually took place.

Supporting documents [processetti or allegati]. These documents were often filed by the bride and groom in support of their intent or "solemn promise" to marry. Records proving their births and their parents’ births and deaths and sometimes documentation on earlier generations may be included. The names of former spouses and their death dates are also provided.(Provided from family search )"

I hope this helps.
