I understand that I’m able to apply for a Italian passport.
I was married in 1977 in the Uk, to an Italian citizen. We divorced in 2005. If I understand correctly upon marriage I became an Italian citizen automatically and even if we divorced it still stands. I have not remarried. The law states that this is the case for marriages pre 1983.
Looking on various website, the American consulates have forms especially for my type of case. There is nothing like that on the London consulate’s site.
I’m wondering how I would apply? Not able to get through on the phone and have not received replies to my emails.
Many thanks
Pre 1983 marriage
Re: Pre 1983 marriage
There should not be a need for any special form. You will have to trace your ex-husband’s line with documents to prove he was an Italian citizen when you married. And, of course, you will submit your pre-1983 marriage certificate as well.

Re: Pre 1983 marriage
Relatives told me that to incentivize Italian citizens to return to fight in the war they promised them that they would pay for their emigration back to the United States after their service was over. I thought that was just a made up story but then I found the manifest for Rosario's return journey to America in 1920.

If the pre-1983 marriage automatically bestowed Italian citizenship on the woman, then does the new (12-2018) requirement of Italian language proficiency apply in such a case?
Re: Pre 1983 marriage
No, this was automatic citizenship, not naturalization.
