Great-Great-Grandfather Pietro Longo in Italy

Post by SBarretta »

Hello all,

Disappointed to be coming up short in finding any information on my GGGF Pietro Longo in Italy. The earliest (US) record I have of him is the 1905 New York State census, showing him & my GGF Gennaro residing in New York City (link below).

US records have him born in Italy around 1860 and arriving in the USA around 1891; though exact years conflict. Our family assumes he is from the south of Italy, though we of course can't say for certain.

All tips for uncovering Italian records would be highly appreciated! I've searched around Ancestry & FamilySearch for him, his wife (my GGGM) Faustina, along with the cousin Antonio to no avail.

Thank you!

Searched on FamilySearch.org. Did the daughter Maria Longo marry a man by the name of Gaetano Alfano in 1910 in Manhattan? If so, her father was Pietro and her mother was Faustina Guadagno (sp?).

Also found a death record for a Fostina Longa on 10 Nov 1910. Is this the GGGM?

Just looking to identify the GGGM maiden name to search on Ellis Island. Did they have any other relatives who emigrated besides Antonio Longo?

Once you have identified the town of origin, if you cannot find any records on familysearch.org, there is also the Antenati site (Italian site) to search.

Regards,
Bette

Hi Bette,

Yes - the marriage of Maria & Gaetano is correct.

I do not know about the death record, however - could you direct me to it? Exciting that this could be a new find :)

Lastly, no, unfortunately the three listed on that census record (Pietro, Faustina, Antonio) are all I know of.

Thank you!

After you go to FamilySearch.org site, go to Search (in the drop down menu), click on Records, then type in the following name in the Deceased Ancestor's field:
Fostina Longa. BTW...all the names look misspelled. The father's first name could be Gennaro. Or you could find this under New York, New York City Municipal, Deaths 1795 - 1949.

No definitive proof but the Longo/Guaragna family might have been from the province of Cosenza. In checking stevemorse site for ship manifests for surname Guaragna, the overwhelming majority of results showed towns in the province of Cosenza with the town of Saracena with the greatest number of hits.

Thanks, Marty. In checking on Familysearch, the Saracena birth records for 1883 and marriage records for the few years prior to 1883 were unable to be filmed due to damage. Records prior to 1865 are only viewable at a Family History Center of Affiliate library so unable to check for Pietrantonio and Faustina births.

Great work everyone! I found the marriage record in the Index and then also found the Pubblicazioni. You are all correct: the town is Saracena, in Cosenza, Calabria. On familysearch.org, if you go to the marriage records of 1878, the index is on Page 2854, Marriage record #8 is listed for Longo, Pietro Antonio and Faustina Guaragna. Then you will find the Pubblicazioni, #10, of April 5, 1878 on Page 1981. (1) Pietro Antonio Longo, age 23, contadino, son of fu Francesco and fu Anna Meli (sp?). (2) Faustina Guaragna, age 20, contadina, daughter of Gennaro and fu Carolina Colisano. Sorry, I could not post the actual pages for you.
