Sicilian Dialect? Petralia Soprana - Mirabella

Post by sgb10 »

Hello, all! Thank you in advance for any help, which will be much appreciated.

I hope that I am posting this in the correct forum, because, although the boiler-plate is in Latin, the manuscript parts appear to be written in Sicilian dialect (I think?) and not standard Italian.

I am assisting a friend with her genealogy. She is a descendant of Girolamo Mirabella, who was born in Petralia Soprana (PA) around 1794 and died in Petralia Soprana in 1854. He was the son of Santo Mirabella and Vittoria Mirti, both of Petralia Soprana. In the “Processetti” for his daughter Carmela’s marriage to her first cousin Leonardo Mirabella in 1857 (at which point Girolamo Mirabella was already deceased), I located the linked record below which appears to reference Santo Mirabella. However, it appears to be written in dialect and I have absolutely no idea what it says:

Could anyone possibly translate this for me? Thank you so much for any assistance!

I read the date of death as Nov 15, 1808 at about age 56. Santo had received all of the Sacraments (those would have been Penance/Confession, Communion/the Eucharist, and Extreme Unction (the last Rites), although these are not specifically named in this record. Burial was in the church of Santa Maria (di) Loreto.

Mille grazie!!!!! You are my hero! One more question, if you don't mind. My friend will actually be visiting Petralia Soprana over the summer. When it says that Santo was buried in the Church of Santa Maria di Loreto - does that mean his actual body is interred in the church? Or does it just mean that that is where they held his funeral mass?

Again, thank you so much!

Here's a link where you can see a few photos of the church.

Burial was somewhere in the church, as far as I understand the record. I honestly can't tell you where in the church though. Some churches had burials in the walls, floors, or even in an underground area. Looking at the photos of this church, I don't think this church would have had a cemetery, or burial ground, outside in back of it, but I could be wrong.

This manuscript is in Latin. It is definitely not the Sicilian language. I don't speak Latin, but I recognize some of the words as Latin. The script is difficult to read, but see below for some of the words that appear in the script that are Latin with the Sicilian language equivalent to the right.

Latin ___________________ Sicilian
fidelium_________________ fideli
defunctorum_____________defuntu
quinquanginta____________cinquanta

I truly apologize! I do not speak Latin either - obviously! - but I can usually recognize it, but I completely failed to do so on this document. Please accept my apologies! And extra thanks to Erudita for her amazing skills and her generosity in using them to help others!
