Typo in "Avellino" — can't find birth record, am I looking in the right place?

Post by robertk »

I'm searching for my GGM's birth record, and I can't seem to track it down due to typos throughout the year.
  • Name: "Maria Telesco" (also used "Mary" and "Marie" in the US)
  • Born: Either 17 Mar 1907 or 16 Mar 1905 in "Avellina, Italy" (the "a" was a typo on the naturalization petition and she lied about her age, producing documents with both birth dates throughout the years)
  • She came to the US when she was 7 years old in 1912.
  • She got married in NJ at age 15 by lying on marriage certificate to say she was 18.
  • Became a US citizen later at the same time as her husband (records attached)
  • Died in 1940 in NJ
I'm attaching all the records I've found for Maria.

I've hit a dead end with trying to find her birth record in Italy due to all the typos. A few researchers suggested she might have been born "Maria Tedesco" or "Maria Telesca" and in the Commune of Avigliano or somewhere in the Providence of Avellino.

Would love to hear your input and thoughts!

Hi, no AVELLINO, but AVIGLIANO, her full name was Donata Maria Telesca, the father was Vito and the mother was Rosa Maria.. here the arrival

no doubts that is the right family...so the Birth must be in Avigliano!

@suanj you are brilliant!! Thank you so much!! And I can confirm I’ve also found this military record for Peter and I have personal knowledge he was part of the family.

Can anyone read the other family members names and ages on the arrival record? I’m having a hard time deciphering the handwriting!

I’m going to request a family status certificate and birth record from Avigliano and see if it all matches up with the rest of my viral records!

Hi:
Vito TELESCA 54 old
Rosa Maria wife 42 old
Caterina daughter 12 old
Pietro son 10 old
Vita Crescenza daughter 8 old
Donata Maria daughter 5 old
Giuseppe son 3 old
Angela Maria daughter some month?

here the index more readable https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903 ... cc=2299396
The family was born and resident in Avigliano, but I cannot find a record of Birth or Vito marriage or marriage banner.. so this is a mystery.. it could be possible also that the family was resident in other town, because the maiden name of rosa Maria on the your attached documents, seeming Casento, and just a possible similar surname could be Caserta, but no one in Avigliano as a well the Caputo. The family joining to Pietro Caputo brother in law.. sothe mystery remain, because I searched on 1905, 1906 and 1907 and I cannot find Donata Maria Birth record as a well Pietro or Caterina etc etc.…
So the research continue!
Best regards,
suanj
