Mystery of a Foundling -- 1878 birth record Rionero in Vulture

Post by jlarisa »

On late Friday, after going through hundreds of pages I found it -- the 1878 birth record of my great grandpa Carlo Larisa. The link is below -- #24.

I found out that a "projetto" or "prioetti" or something like that is an abandoned baby so the adoption appears to be true. Can someone please translate?

Now here is the mystery. Carlo's obituary in 1969 reported that he was the son of Giovanni and Irene (DiBattista) Larisa. Yet, it appears that the Rionero official named him with a made up name, and there appears to be no Larisa's anywhere in Italy today, nor any record of them in Rionero in Vulturi at the time.

What I am guessing is that Carlo make up that the parents who adopted him had the surname "Larisa." The family folk law is that he was raised on a farm in Rionero by well off parents.

What Is do know for sure is that he married in Italy in 1897 or 1898 a Theresa Palermo (born in 1878) and that they had a son (my grandfather) Giovanni Larisa in Rionero in Vulture in August 1900 (I have the Italian birth certificate.)

It is my understanding that the marriage records could contain information on who raised Carlo Larisa (and certainly more info on Theresa Palermo), but I went through every marriage record from Rionero in Vulture from 1896-1899 and found no Larisa marriage. I do not know where Theresa Palermo actually married Carlo Larisa so I am stumped.

I am trying to find out is somehow Carlo's parents were REALLY somehow Larisas and if not who raised him?

Any ideas on how/where to look? Thanks,

Sincerely,
Joe L.

Here's a link to their marriage publications in Rionero. Teresa was born in the town of Ginestra, so you should look for the original marriage record there. Carlo is listed of unknown parents in this record.

Here's a link to the supporting documents for the marriage. There are a lot of records here to translate, and I'm on my way out and can't do them now. Will help you as soon as I can, unless someone else gets to them first.

Starting with the first record, it is a request from Ginestra, which at the time (until 1965 actually) was a frazione or hamlet of the town of Ripacandida) that the publications for the marriage of Carlo Larisa and Teresa Palerm be made in his town of birth and residence, Rionero, The publications were made on Feb 26th and March 5th 1899. This was to insure there was no opposition to the upcoming marriage. Carlo, age 20, was a peasant born and resident in Rionero. He was of unknown parents. Teresa Palermo, also age 20, was the daughter of deceased Angelo Palermo, and Maria Pepice, also a peasant, resident in Ginestra.

The next record is the act of matrimony which took place in Ginestra on March 12, 1899. The same info about the spouses is given in this record. However, at the bottom we learn that the bride's mother gave her consent to the marriage and also that the groom had the consent of a guardianship council. I will further explain this when I translate the records which appear in the allegati for this marriage, among the records from Ginestra. We also see at the bottom that the groom, the witnesses, and the town official signed the document. The bride and her mother did not sign the document, as they did not know how to write.

Images 258-262 are documents related to the marriage publications made in Rionero and Ginestra. In each case, the first publication was posted on a Sunday and remained posted for a week and then was replaced by the second publication, which then remained posted for a period of three days. The ones posted in both towns resulted in no opposition to the marriage. Images 260 and 261 are the publications posted in Ginestra. You already have a document from Rionero from the publications posted there.

Image 262 is an extract of the birth act of Carlo Larisa. It is identical to the one you already found in Rionero describing him being found on the foundling wheel and the receiver of that institution presenting him to the town official who, in turn, assigned him his first and last names. It was left to this receiver to then give the infant to a wetnurse, as infants during that time period needed to be breastfed.

Image 263 is an extract of the death act of Angelo Palermo, father of the bride. He died on September 22, 1898 at 11:30 a.m. in the house on Strada sotto la Chiesa. He was age 65, who had been born and was living in Ripacandida. He was the son of deceased Antonio Palermo and deceased Rosa Leone, and the husband of Maria Pepice.

Image 264 is dated Feb 14, 1899. Carlo appeared asking that a council be formed to deliberate whether or not he was worthy of being united in marriage with Teresa Palermo. This was because he was underage and had no parents or relatives to give consent for him to marry. His age of 20 was considered at the time to be a minor age. The council would discuss whether, for example, he was of good moral character. Then consent would be given by the council for him to marry.

Image 265 has to do with the Lista di Leva (military conscription). He was recorded with the class of 1878, which was the year of his birth. However, upon examination, he was deferred to the class of 1879, as he was found to have bilateral conjunctivitis (pink eye in both eyes).

Image 266-birth extract of Teresa Palermo born on Sept 30, 1878, at 3:15 a.m, in the house on Strada Piazza. Her father, Angelo Palermo was age 38 and a peasant living in Ginestra. Her mother Maria Pepice was age 27 at the time and also a peasant who was living with her husband.

I believe this is everything in the allegati package for their marriage.

For your info, if you search the Larisa surname on the antenati website, two women with that surname in two different regions, appear in the search-
