San Giuseppe District vs San Giuseppe Commune

Post by dpv »

Hi. I was hoping someone could help me with an area of confusion.

My Boccia (or Boccio...it was seemingly both) ancestors came from, I believe, San Giuseppe Vesuviano, which is a commune of the Metropolitan City of Naples.

Someone doing research to help me out sent me a birth certificate for a potential relative and the location is listed as: Stato Civile del Circondario San Giuseppe Comune di Napoli, Provincia di Napoli. Everything but "San Giuseppe" was already typed in on the form...the San Giuseppe was put in by hand.

Now, I know there is also a quarter in Naples with the name San Giuseppe.

On the birth certificate, as near as I can tell, the words "Veusviano" do not appear anywhere. I find this odd, since these relatives of mine would often use San Giuseppe Vesuviano on many documents in the US as the place they were from.

So...I am left to wonder. Is the birth certificate I have from "San Giuseppe Vesuviano" (i.e. the commune) or from the quarter called San Giuseppe within Naples? I assume the former, but there is enough doubt to make me unsure.

Thank you to anyone who can provide some insight here.

Warm regards,

Don

Hello Don, welcome to the forum.

It would be of great help if you could post an image of the document you are referencing.
Then we can see it in context.

Hello! The certificate is from San Giuseppe "section" in the City of Naples.
However, father's surname in the certificate is "Coscia", not "Boccia", and he was from Morcone, in region Molise (now region Campania, province of Benevento). There's nothing that seems to connect to some Boccia's in San Giuseppe Vesuviano...

To add more clarification to Pippo's :D comments...

Here is the link to page two (and access to page one) of the birth act.
On the second page there is a correction (in 1887 by the court) to the name of the child's father - It is Felice, and not Pasquale.
Also on this page you can see the signature of the father on the original document and the surname is clearly Coscia.
FYI - the underlined "di Napoli d'anni" after Don Pasquale is the clerk indicating an error. He then writes "dico di Morcone..." meaning that he meant to say from Morcone.

The record is from the San Giuseppe "quarter of the Metropolitan City of Naples.

Wow! Thank you. What you provide is compelling. I guess it is not a Boccia/o document.

I appreciate the help and being part of this community.
