death act help please

Post by dmt1955 »

the death act for Matteo Grasso states that he is born in Ariano, nel Lazzaretto detto Marteri.

google translator: in the Lazzaretto called Marteri. what (where?) is a lazzaretto?

thanks so much

The comune today is called Ariano Irpino. See link to the history of its name and province name changes over the years;

The "Lazzaretto detto Marteri" is likely a reference to the the "rione" or neighborhood where the death took place.

definition of "lazzaretto" is leper hospital. The word is used for a place of confinement for the ill.

Perhaps he was born in a hospital called Martyrs?

Here is a link to some historical information about Lazzarettos

It is interesting to note that the Farmacia Ariano (The Pharmacy) is located on Via Lazzaretto in Ariano Irpino :-)

Tessa...very interesting. So a death in a Lazzaretto doesn't necessarily mean that leprosy was the cause....it just became another name for a hospital or hospice?

I have seen so many death records, but have never seen a reference to this before.

http://www.treccani.it/enciclopedia/lazzaretto/
lazzaretto Particolare tipo di ospedale destinato all’isolamento degli ammalati incurabili o affetti da malattie contagiose. Il termine, che sopravvive localmente, è oggi sostituito ufficialmente da ospedale contumaciale.

At that time (1865, August 27 - 1868, May 13) there was a cholera epidemic in Ariano.
