Help with an unusual birth translation

Post by bsanocki »

I need some help translating this. It looks like a birth certificate for Domenico Antonio Marinelli from 1886, but I think it's more than that. I think someone is claiming him as their natural son, but can't tell who is doing that. Also confused about why Luigi Montano is listed in the document. Any help is really appreciated.

Domenico Antonio Marinelli was recognized as their son by Domenicantonio Marinelli (same name) son of deceased Francesco, and Teresa Gallicchio, daughter of deceased Giovanni.
He was born on Oct 4th, 1885 in Marsiconuovo, and recorded as Domenicantonio Mele (?) (Nati 1885, #35 P.II), son of unknown parents. Emanuela Di Gerardo, wife of Fortunato Donatantonio had been chosen to be feed him as a wet nurse. Pier Luigi Montesano is the Notary, in front of which the parents declared to recognize him.

Thank you so much for your help. The odd thing about this, is that Domenico Marinelli born 1820, and Teresa Gallicchio born 1836, were married in November 1885. I'm certain that they both were married prior, which has me confused as to why they would have claimed a son born in 1885 when they were both so old? Would it be because he was conceived out of wedlock?

Here is the original birth act for Domenicantonio Mele in October 1885 (as Pippo :-) indicated, #35 in Pt. II)
The child was presented to the official by the "receiver of the abandoned" Augustalia Barone, age 54. She indicated that he appeared to be about 4 days old. The official gave the child the name Domenicantonio and the surname Mele, and consigned the child to Emanuela Patrone (daughter of Gerardo) age 24, wife of Donato Antonio Fortunato (son of Francesco) for care and nourishment.

There is a margin notation of a recognition by the natural parents - the record you posted.

Thank you Tessa, I appreciate the help very much. Do you happen to know if it was a usual practice do claim a child if they were conceived out of wedlock?

Yes, that's probably why they did
