Liste di Leva for Campobasso
Liste di Leva for Campobasso
Hi, I'm looking for any military records for Gabriele Prete who was born on September 16,1869 in Conca Casale/Pozzilli, Campobasso. Would anyone have the address of the web site of the Campobasso Liste di Leva?
Thanks for any help!

Re: Liste di Leva for Campobasso
Thank you for the reply. I went to the Archivio di Stato di Isernia site but was unable to navigate it - my Italian is extremely basic. I've searched a liste di leva in Salerno and could do the work if I can get to the correct web site. A link would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you.
Thank you.

You won't find the record on the website for Isernia but you will find the email address to write for a copy.

Thank you for your help.
Would you know how long the young men were required to serve when they were called up for military service at age 17?

Gabriele left Italy for France at some point. I'm trying to find out when. I had hoped to see if he had served in the military online, but if I know how long a drafted man had to serve, it might rule out his service and make contacting the Archivio unnecessary.
Thank you for any help.

The Lista di Leva is just the list of men eligible to serve in the military. It is created by the town from the birth records. To know if he served (or was called to serve) you need to request the Foglio matricolare. It should tell you if he notified the government that he went to France.

Thank you, for that information. But I do have a date when he was definitely in France and I might not need to go to the trouble of contacting them at all if it falls within the time he should have been serving. I'll know that he didn't serve. But I need to know how long the military service period was to figure it out.

Once you are called to serve, it is usually 2 years but then you are sent home on unlimited leave. That way they can call you back at any time. There is a post on my website that talks about how some men don't have to serve. Like if they are the sole supporter of the family or medically unfit.

Hi, do you know of a Maria Prete living in Pozilli about the same time as Gabriele? My G-G-grandfather Augustine (Agostino) Guatieri was in Pozzilli in 1860's and had a child with Maria named Madalena in 1866.

I'm sorry, no. Maria would have been about a generation older than Gabriele who was born in 1869. I knew Gabriele was born and lived in Conca Casale but documents said "Pozilli" which puzzled me. It turned out that Conca Casale didn't have a town government at that time and was considered a village within the town of Pozzilli. Conca Casale is a beautiful place on the top of a mountain - and had a lot of Pretes. The way my grandmother told it, the whole village was Pretes
) So it might be possible that your relative actually lived in Conca Casale.

I visited Conca Casale many years ago having gotten a ride from a cousin on the other side of my family. No one wanders in by mistake - you have to make an effort to get there. The road circles the mountain and the news that "strangers are coming" apparently spreads through the whole village well before anyone actually arrives. We were met in the town square by what appeared to be the whole village population. I asked for my grandmother's cousin twice and was met with total silence. My driver, understanding the problem, told the crowd that I was a cousin from the United States. The lady was then literally pushed to the front of the suddenly much friendlier crowd. I was a relative - not a problem
.
Good luck in finding more information on Maria and Madalena.

Thanks, I was in Pozzilli in 2013. No Guatieri's live there any more, and the local priest was on siesta, so didn't get any family info. Didn't have the info about Maria Prete at that time so didn't ask about her either. Just delving a little deeper into my Italian history now.
