Vincenzo Nigro, natural son

February 5, 1899 at town hall in Viggiano appeared Maria Giuseppa Nigro, son of Tommaso (deceased), age 23, farmer, domiciled in Viggiano, who declared that at 2:30 a.m. on February 1, 1899, in the home on Contrada Legneta, she gave birth from her legitimate union with a single man who was not a relative to the degree that would impede recognition. The child was given the name of Vincenzo Nigro.

In the left margin it notes that December 30, 1920 in Viggiano he married Anna Maria Nigro, daughter of Maria (Rossina?) deceased. Then, Potenza October 18, 1922. I’m not sure of the significance of the second date.

Mariaurelia Vitale

February 5, 1899 at town hall in Viggiano appeared Carlo Vitale, age 30, farmer, domiciled in Viggiano, who declared that at 11:30 p.m. on February 3, 1899, in their home on Contrada San Benedetto, a child was born of his legitimate union with Eleonora Maria Nigro, age 26, farmer, who lives with him. The child was a female child and she was given the name of Mariaurelia Vitale.

Just three things I'm noting:

1. The word "legitimate" there is an error - it's been crossed out. There is a note at the bottom of the record referring to this. It states that the declarant was "Nubile" so, had never been married, and was not currently married.

2. I'm reading "Rosina" with one "s"

3. The date 18-10-1922 is the date that the marriage "annotation" took place.

Thanks. I didn't recognize the bars at first as a cross out, but do now. It makes much more sense with the rest of the text. It was clearly an out-of-wedlock birth, but it also clearly said legitimate union. Now I see the bars over legitimate.

You are welcome. I saw this record earlier but didn't have time to translate. You'll also notice that it has the word "naturale" under the child's name in the margin. I'm understanding that this word is usually used when a child has been born from the union of an unmarried couple.

Thank you both very much!!

I've noticed quite a few "naturale" notations and wasn't sure exactly what it meant.

Do you think the marriage record will list the name of the child's father?

Unless the father formally recognized the child later on, it wouldn't typically give the name of the father. That happened sometimes, and if he did you'll usually find a legal document evidencing that.

Just adding to what has already been said: Sometimes, not always, you might also see an annotation on the birth record, indicating that the child was later legitimised.
