Polish Citizenship Name Issue

Post by PógMoThóin »

Hi everyone,

So I am currently in the process of applying for Polish citizenship.

One of the stipulations was that I correct any name discrepancies upfront for the vital records before I send them off to receive apostilles.

My great-grandfather was born in Łańcut, around 1887 and immigrated to the US in 1913. He met my great-grandmother who was born in Wampierzow, Mielec, in 1892. They got married in Connecticut in 1914.

I am applying through my great-grandfather.

His first name on immigration record is: Josef
His first name on marriage record is: Juzef
His first name on WWI draft registration is: Josef
His first name on 1920 Census is: Joseph
His first name on my GF's birth certificate is: Joseph
His first name on 1930 Census is: Joseph
His first name on WWII draft registration is: Joseph
His first name on 1940 Census is: Joseph
His first name on Death Certificate is: Joseph
His first name on GF's marriage certificate is: Joseph
His first name on GF's death certificate is: Joseph

Basically, I need to amend his marriage record name of "Juzef" to match "Joseph" on all the other vital records (his death, my grandfather's birth/marriage/death).

I called the local town registrar in Connecticut and they said that it was impossible to amend the name, since it was against the law and the one who signed attesting to his name is now dead.

I am aware that many immigrants Anglicized/Americanized their names in order to fit in with everyone else, and that means people would just start using their names without any formal name change declaration to the government.

Because I would need to somehow show that he is the one and the same, my question for y'all is this:

How would I go about getting a change of name certificate or one of the same affidavit for a dead great-grandfather's marriage record in Connecticut?

Any help would be much appreciated!

Will answer any questions if you have some.
