Death Record - Translation + Mystery?

Post by mnaccarato »

Hi All, looking for some help regarding the early death of my Great-Great-Grandfather Salvatore Asta. I've translated the 1917 death record below, so would appreciate the cross-reference on that. To provide some context here, Salvatore had married his wife Sebastiana Cutrona in Manhattan, NYC in 1914 and they gave birth to one daughter in 1915 also in Manhattan, my great-grandmother Giovanna. Sebastiana was born in Licodia Eubea and Salvatore was born in Vizzini. As a result, it's odd to me that this record states he was "living in Vizzini" as it would have made the most sense that he was just visiting and living in NYC. He was only 25 so I wonder what caused his death, is there anything in the annotation on the right side? And if not, any ideas on how one would find that out?

Additional Questions:
It looks like both officials of Vizzini and Licodia Eubea are named here, why would there be both? Is it clear which commune he actually died in? I’m thinking Licodia Eubea since that was the official who signed.
What do the side annotations state? I see a few “1900” dates written.

Act #3. December 10, 1917. Appeared Salvatore Cutrona, 70 years old, shepherd, domiciled in this commune, and Caetano Pari, 37 years old, farmer, domiciled in this commune, who declared that at 4 o’clock yesterday, in the house of Via del Popolo #41, Salvatore Asta died, 25 years old, barber, living in Vizzini, born in Vizzini, of Giuseppe, trader/manufacturer, domiciled in Vizzini, and of Giovanna Cutrona, housewife, domiciled in Vizzini, married to Sebastiana Cutrona.

To the above and to this act were present as witnesses: Vincenzo [last name?], 65 years old, farmer, and Angelo Socilla, 52 years old, farmer, both residents in the commune. The present act, read to the participants, was signed by me as the others were illiterate.

What do the side annotations state? I see a few “1900” dates written. This is just the closing of the register. The only way it relates to your particular record is because it happens to be the last one recorded in the register that year.

You are correct, he did die in Licodia Eubea. Here is his original Death Record: https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903 ... cc=1483039

A copy of the Death Record was sent back to his birth town of Vizzini and was then written up in the supplementary pages of the 1817 Vizzini Death Register.

I hope this helps to solve some of your mystery.

Here's a translation of the original death record. Salvatore Cutrona, one of the witnesses was 60 rather than 70. There's no indication of how Salvatore Asta died. Death Records don't usually record this but sometimes if deaths occured out of town they do, especially if they died overseas. Few towns do record cause of death, but they would be the exception rather than the rule.

          Death No 190: Salvatore Asta

          Licodia Eubea: 10 December 1917
Before the official in the town of Licodia Eubea, appeared Salvatore Cutrona, 60 yo, pastore (shepherd), living this town, and Gaetano Pedi, 37 yo, villico, living this town. They reported that at 4 am yesterday, in the house in Via Del Popolo, No 41, died Salvatore Asta, 25 yo, barbiere, who was residing in Vizzini when living, the son of Giuseppe Asta, industrioso, living in Vizzini, and of Giovanna Cutrona, a casalinga, also living in Vizzini. He (Salvatore) was the husband of Sebastiana Cutrona.

Witnesses to the declaration and recording of the act were Vincenzo Guglielmino, 65 yo, villico, and Angelo Failla, 52 yo, villico.

Having read the present document to all those present, I only have signed, as the others present were illiterate.

Angela - that is incredibly helpful. That there are two records. I'm still confused on why it would say "residing in Vizzini" when he was living in NYC. I see in the original copy that it says "invitare Vizzini" - does that shed any light?

What it says is "in vita in Vizzini" which means "in life" or " when living" - so basically it means "he resided in Vizzini when living". Maybe the two men who declared his death didn't know him so well (often they didn't) and only knew that he was currently residing in Vizzini (although I notice that one of the declared, was a Salvatore Cutrono?).
