Would a man born in 1839 have served in the military in Sicily in the 1880’s? Was there an age limit? Would there be a record of his service? Lists de Leva? I’m hoping to find a military record an ancestor. Thank you

Nunzio Giuttari. Born in 16 Jan 1837 in Sorrentini, Messina, Sicily. He may have also lived in Gioiosa Marea in the 1860’s.

The Kingdom of Italy was founded in 1861. In that year, a series of laws were passed regarding compulsory military service, which varied by region. In Sicily the draft began in 1861, starting with people born in 1840. And even then, it was only in 1865 that the Liste di Leva were standardized. You definitely won't find your ancestor in the Liste di Leva.

It's possible your ancestor was drafted in the time of Kingdom of Two Sicilies, but you could pay your way out of that draft. And even if he did serve I'm not sure what, if any, documentation would exist. It's also possible that he served in the Regio Esercito or the Regia Marina, at a later point in his life, in which case he would presumably have a foglio matricolare.
