Seeking Advice! Italian citizenship next steps: 1948 case, or... ?

Hi all,

So glad to find this site and I’m hoping you guys can point me in the right direction!! I’m in the process of researching if/how to obtain Italian citizenship via my great-grandparents, and am trying to determine the best next steps.

Both of my great-grandparents were born in Italy (Bisaccia). My great-grandfather came to the US in 1928, and my great-grandmother followed with their two children a few years later. My grandmother was born in the US in 1931; Her two older siblings were born in Italy. At least according to the 1940 census, at that time my great-grandfather was naturalized and his wife (my grandmother’s mother) was still an alien. “AL” is also listed for the two older children that were born in Italy, but the citizenship box on the census was left blank for my grandmother and her younger sister, who were both born in the US.

Am I correct in assuming that *if* my great-grandfather naturalized sometime between 1928-1931 before my grandmother was born, my only other option would be to pursue a “1948 case”? (Which I should prepare myself for in terms of cost (4K+) and time(3yrs+)?)

Any input/advice/ideas are very much appreciated! I’m still trying to find out when exactly my great-grandfather naturalized, so if you have any links/threads relevant to that as well, please feel free to share. Thanks so much in advance, I really appreciate it.

Yes, if your ggf naturalized during that period, you would need to go the 1948 route. However, your gm was born only three years after your ggf arrived in the US. The odds are good that he did not naturalize until after her birth.

Thank you so much more! I appreciate it. I just found out that he naturalized in 1929, so it looks like it’ll be a 1948 case after all. I know there’s someone that’s been mentioned frequently on this forum for being a successful lawyer for 1948 cases; I’m going to look through the forums and see if I can find their info. Although I what with everything that’s happening and how hard Italy was hit, might be good to wait a bit. My hearts are with everyone.
