Surname

Post by andremajor »

Hello,
My grandmother's family name was Minsucchia. She was born in Melfi, Potenza province, Basilicata in 1896.
I cannot seem to find any records of that name anywhere in Melfi. Would you have any information that could help me with my research. Maybe that family name is extinct.
Thank you

is it possible her surname was originally Mossucca? What was her first name? Here's the 1896 birth index for Melfi and a record for a female born that year. I didn't go through the entire index though, so there may be other females.

I looked at the list published by Erudits and found two possibilities
Mazzucca Emma, daughter of Antonio and Paolina Gervasio, record 184
Mazzucca Giuseppina, daughter of Pasquale and Maria Donata Pontolillo, record 109

Mazzucca sounds very much like Minsucchia and the spelling may be the result of misunderstanding the name and inadequate capability to read and write
The last names of the mothers above appear to be what I wrote. The handwriting is atrocious.
I hope this helps

In order to search it might be helpful to also know the first name(s), if you know any.

Again, looking through Erudita's links, and if the last name is Mossucca:

Record 56 Valentina Mossucca
