Help finding Death Record

Post by kgargano »

Hello, I'm hoping to have some help in finding the death record for my ancestor, Francesco DiStefano. I've determined a timeframe he may have passed away, but haven't been able to find the record.

Francesco DiStefano was born in 1823 in Caltavuturo, Italy to Antonio DiStefano and Giovanna Chiappone. In 1849, he married Sebastiana DiMarte (1831-1895) and had five children: Antonio (1850-1937), Vincenzo (1852-?), Gesualda (1855-?), Giovanna (1858-?) and Giuseppe (1861-?).

Flash forward to 1875, Gesualda marries and Francesco is listed as deceased. Going off this, I'm given the timeframe that Francesco may have passed between 1860-1875. Putting 1860 assuming he may have died prior to Giuseppe's birth in early 1861.

Despite having this timeframe and checking Caltavuturo records several times on FamilySearch, I can't seem to find his death record.

Any help or suggestions on how to find his death record would be greatly appreciated! Thank you!

If you have Giuseppe's 1861 birth record, could you please upload the link to that. If Francesco had died prior to Giuseppe's birth, it should note it on his birth record.

Here is the 1861 Birth Record of Giuseppe Di Stefano: http://dl.antenati.san.beniculturali.it ... ewsIndex=0

(Francesco is living. I also checked the 1860 and 1861 Death Records, just in case there was an omission in Giuseppe's Birth record.)

@Angela

Ciao Giorgio

Yes, yesterday I already looked at these same documents that you mention. It was disappointing not to locate the Death Record amongst the marriage allegati. In looking through the other allegati, it seems like the town maybe only included the bride and grooms birth records. I took a look at one other child's marriage records but didn't see a Death Record there for Francesco. I also went through all the death indices but with no joy. I began looking through the few years of diversi but then needed to do something else. Anyways, I'm going to leave this now, until the poster returns, and hopefully links us to the other marriage records.

I hope you are keeping well.

Angela :)

Thank you everyone for your help. Unfortunately I don't know what happened to the other children and only have marriage records for Gesualda and Antonio.

On another forum someone suggested Francesco may have died in another town and his death is recorded there. Has anyone seen this before?

I only have one instance (that I've found so far) of a family member "disappearing" and it is listed as such on a marriage record, that the family doesn't know what happened to him. I was new to genealogy at the time of learning this so never investigated further, figuring it was a dead end.

Yes, normally when a person died, the death would be registered in the town s/he died. Usually then a hand written copy of the death record would then be sent back to the deceased's town of birth/residence. The official would then enter the details in either the "diversi" records (that's why I looked through the "diversi" records for the years 1860-1865). Post 1865 any out of town deaths that occurred would be entered in the supplementary records e.g. Part II records. Your records are a little different though. There seem to be few supplementary records?

It's a real mystery as to why Francesco's death record isn't there. One reason might be that, while the death has been entered in the register, it has been omitted from the index or entered incorrectly. I know that with my own records that there have been occasions when a record has been omitted from the index.

In case you don't have these, here are the other 1895 marriage documents relating to Antonio Di Stefano and Margherita Ruffino:

Let us know if we can be of any other help.
