And in the publication records, is the date the marriage actually occured anywhere on it or just the dates of the public announcement? The woman is the same on each document with a different groom, the first from March 1887, and the second from May 1887. I'm wondering if there is anything on the document that will explain that? Thank you!

Translation of 2 marriage publications
Hello, I need 2 marriage publications translated from 1887. I do not have the links. Can I just post a .jpeg of the record?

Please post the images.
You can use https://postimages.org/ and copy and paste the Direct LInk URL
To answer some of your questions...
The marriage USUALLY occurred within a few days of the last posting of the Banns of Marriage (publication), but could occur up to 6 months later.
The bride in each of your records MAY be the same person, but also may not. Similar names are common.

Re: Translation of 2 marriage publications
I found a different marriage publication for the groom in the first document too. It looks like he married someone else in that same year too. So I should assume that the marriage between Agro / Porcello was called off for some reason?
Re: Translation of 2 marriage publications
I would agree that the marriage announced in March for Calogero Agro' did not take place. The March Pubblicazione is mentioned in the publication that is dated June for his intended marriage to Rosa Agro'.
The bride, Giuseppa Porcello, appears to have entered into a different promise to marry with Alfonso Vella, in May. The first Pubblicazione is also mentioned in her May record.

Re: Translation of 2 marriage publications
Is it also mentioned in the May Publication for Giuseppa Porcello & Alfonzo Vella? Does it give any further info? I'm mainly interested in that one because those two are my great grandparents. I answered previously in the quick reply box, but it didn't show up in the thread. Did that not go through because I had some general questions.
Re: Translation of 2 marriage publications
No other information other than that the previous record was presented to the official.
It is interesting to note that Alfonzo Vella was a witness on the Publication for Calogero and Giuseppa.
What can I help to answer?

Re: Translation of 2 marriage publications
Perhaps Calogero learned of Giuseppa's correct age???
In the March record she is age 29 (Calogero is 28.)
In the June record she is age 36 (Alfonzo is age 40.)

Re: Translation of 2 marriage publications
Thank you! I did notice that Alfonzo Vella was a witness.
Can you, or anyone, shed some light on their way of life back then? For instance, I found several birth records of children born outside of marriage. (in general, not all in my family
) Do you know if that situation was common back then? Some records had the mother listed and some did not. If the parents didn't eventually marry, these kids seemed to be raised with the father's family.
I also noticed the difference in ages on the 2 records and I thought Calogero Agro may have found out how old she really was. I've seen her birth record. She was born in 1850, so 36 was correct. She also had 3 kids with another man, but that's another story!

Re: Translation of 2 marriage publications
Not as uncommon as you might think.
Did you find the marriage of Giuseppa and Alfonzo? If children were born prior to the marriage of a couple, they were often "recognized" in the marriage record.
This article might provide some historical information about children born outside of Marriage.

And in case you do not have this...the Birth Act of Giuseppa Porcello in 1850 (#357)

Re: Translation of 2 marriage publications
Very interesting article. Thank you. I thought maybe so many were born outside of marriage because Italy didn't recognize divorce. Perhaps people were wary of getting married. But in fact it was the catholic marriages that they didn't recognize. I guess I had it backwards.
I did locate the marriage record of Giuseppa and Alfonzo, and I don't believe her children were mentioned on it. Alfonzo was not the father of these children. I don't even think she was raising them. Family members mentioned that my grandfather had a half brother, but because they never said anyting about his having a half sister, I don't think they ever knew. The third child had died as a baby. So many mysteries.

Re: Translation of 2 marriage publications
I just posted Giuseppa's birth act above.
And here is a link to the Allegati (attachments) to the marriage.
It contains the publication and the births/baptisms of both Alfonzo and Giuseppa.

So Giuseppa's children were born with the Porcello surname?

Re: Translation of 2 marriage publications
Thank you so much!
One of her children was given both surnames (the middle one) the other 2 were given the father’s surname.

It also contains Alfonzo's birth act.
So the father is mentioned (which indicates he recognized the children as his) and Giuseppa is mentioned?
Can you post a link for me?
Or provide the names and dates so I can view the records?

Re: Translation of 2 marriage publications
I always wondered what the allegati was. I can't read something that is completely written out. Part of my problem is I don't know the Italian language. The other part of the problem was i have a hard time reading their handwriting.
Here are the 3 birth records for Giuseppa's children. (well, her first 3)

Re: Translation of 2 marriage publications
In the birth record for Vincenzo, Giuseppa is identified as Salvatore Bentivenga's wife.
