Translation of Marriage Act

Post by delfgill »

Can someone please translate Image 19/Folio 17:

http://dl.antenati.san.beniculturali.it ... ewsIndex=0

Also, is this a combination marriage act/publication? I was hoping to find two separate documents. Usually there's a reference to the processetti but I don't see one?

Here is what I understand. There was just one word that I was stuck on, which repeats, but I think that I've interpreted the Act correctly regardless.

Marriage No 17: Domenico Francesco Crupi and Caterina Callea

Left side of the page is the Promise to Marry, registered in the town of Bova on 28 August 1853

Right side of the page is the Marriage Entry – Married in the Church of Santa Caterina on 29 August 1853.

Groom: Domenico Francesco Crupi, 24 yo, born in Siderno, a day labourer (bracciale), living in Bova, son of the deceased Vincenzo, who had also been a day labourer (and had lived in Bova?), and of Caterina Romeo, living in Bova

Bride: Anna Petrulli, commonly called Maria, 18 yo, born in Bova, daughter of the deceased Domenico Petruli, who had been a day labourer (and had lived in Bova?), and of Caterina Callea, living in Bova.

The notification of this promise was posted on the door of the town hall in Bova on Sunday, 7 August 1853.

The next page lists the documents that were presented before the marriage could take place:

Birth Certificate of the Groom
Death Certificate of the father of the groom
Death Certificate of the paternal grandfather of the groom.
An extract of the Notificazione (Bann) (Posted Siderno, I suppose)
Birth Certificate of the Bride
Death Certificate of the father of the bride
Death Certificate of the paternal grandfather of the bride
An extract of the Notification (Bann) (posted in Bova)

The Processetti for this marriage, containing all the attachments listed in the marriage record, begins here: http://dl.antenati.san.beniculturali.it ... ewsIndex=0

No, not "simile". I know this word.

The word I don't know looks like "alsano" and it follows the word "domiciliato". I think that it actually reads "a bova".

Thank you so very much. I appreciate your help and time.

For future reference, any suggestions on how to navigate through the Processetti pages?

Re: Navigating through Processetti

You'll often find that the processetti have been filmed out of order.

Look to see whether the processetti have a cover page, and what it looks like e.g. http://dl.antenati.san.beniculturali.it ... =155206447

(This one is a really good one as it not only contains the Marriage Record Number and the names of the bride and groom, but it also lists the documents appearing within the package. Most just include the number of documents included in the package. Ofcourse, the documents presented, necessary for the marriage to take place, are normally written on the marriage record anyway.)

The index number of the Marriage Record is always included on the cover sheet. Sometimes it is top left, and sometimes it is top right: e.g. No 31: http://dl.antenati.san.beniculturali.it ... 2.jpg.html

Sometimes it is at the top in the middle of the cover sheet. It should always be somewhere on the cover page.(One of my towns has the No of the marriage recorded below the names of the bride and groom: http://dl.antenati.san.beniculturali.it ... 0.jpg.html ) You'll get to know where to look for the number, in your own records.

So once you know what the cover sheets from your respective town and year look like, then you can quickly and easily click on each of the images that look like a "Cover Sheet". You'll soon get a sense of whether the processetti packages are in numerical order or not. While I'm navigating through the film, I often jot down the image number of the cover sheet with the index number, so that I have this information for future reference, if needed. If I'm working with two monitors I save the link to the cover sheet and note the index no before the link, or with my own records I have typed both the Index No and the spouses names before the link. One reason I did this was, that if I knew of a couple, but didn't know when they married, then I could just run a search on my computer.

If there is no Cover Sheet, then look for the marriage record within the package. Normally a handwritten copy of the marriage record is included in each processetti package. You'll find it either at the start of the marriage package or at the end. Once you know what you are looking for, then just click on those images until you find the relevant one. It is much easier of course when there is a Cover Sheet because the Cover Sheet is so distinct.

So this is basically what I do and it works for me. Looking for processetti/allegati can be really time consuming but it can also be really rewarding. Just be aware though, that there can also be clerical errors in allegati. The documents contained are handwritten copies, not the original civil and/or church records. With my own research I have always fetched the original civil record, checked it, and added that to my file.

I hope this helps.

Angela,

Thank you very much for providing instructions on how to navigate through processetti/allegati records. I appreciate it more than I can say.

Hopefully these records will soon be digitized for the years and towns I need to research.

Best,

You are so welcome M. I'm glad that you found my notes helpful. Thank you for letting me know.

I was going to mention also, that if I notice that the first few "cover sheets" that I look at are in some sort of order, just not beginning at No 1, then I might skip a "cover sheet" image or two, jot down the image numbers that I miss and keep working on. After searching through processetti records for a while you sort of get a sense of where the marriage package you are looking for might be. Also, when you know now many documents are included in the marriage package you are looking for, that information also helps.

Best to you,
Angela
