Darmanie family history

Post by rdarmanie »

Hey I'm doing a search for my family origins. We strongly believe the name is Italian in origin, but it may also be from Malta or another mediteranean nation. The only link we have is an ancestor named Adolf Darmanie. Both the first and surname may have changed spelling over the years though. He left Italy/Malta and came to the Caribbean, to the isles of Trinidad and Tobago. We were told that he and his brother came together probably in the 1800's. I know it's not a lot of Information to go on, but i would appreciate any help possible, we have been searching on other sites for the longest while without luck. So please if anyone knows anything about the name Darmanie or even an alternate spelling, i would greatly appreciate it. We actually have a picture of him that I'm currently trying to find. Thanks!! Sounds like it could be Maltese...and there may have been a name change to Americanize it. Have you tried Ellis Island soundex...Adolf is a German name I believe...

Can you provide us with a year of birth, death, spouse name and maybe any siblings...it will help us to narrow down the search.

The only Italian variation I've seen so far is Dormani,Armando Santo Stefano, Italy on ellis.

Will wait for more info from you.

Thanks for such a quick response, but i'm afraid that all the information we have that's why it's been so hard to trace the origins. Is it even possible to find anything with such little to go on?

Hmm - on the 1861 English census there is a Salvo DARMANIN from Malta born about 1842. He was working for the Royal navy - so there should be more records there maybe. I'll keep looking for other variants :D

Yes - there are a few DARMANINs on various UK censuses - all from Malta. Could your name perhaps have been derived from this do you think?

Marisa

PS - could this just maybe be an Adolf

Thanks a lot for everyone's help, it seems that Christiana Marceline Darmanie may have been an ancestor. I think i may be on to something, i found a family tree that matches our knowledge roughly, but that tree too only says that the original darmanie came from italy, and nothing else. According to the tree, Adolf was not the original Darmanie who came to Trinidad, he was in fact his son. I'll keep looking, but I still haven't reached too much further in terms of finding out about that original darmanie. I still doubt that the spelling we use today is the original one. I'm still excited though because i've found out the names of possible relatives. I would still appreciate any more information.
