Help with translation of Maritano death cert

Post by JohnBhoy »

Looking for a little help with the translation of entry 69, Catterina Maritano please.

https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903 ... at=1019269

I think I understand she was 48 years old, born, lived, died in Comune of Sant'Ambrogio with death registered on 5th of September.
She was a peasant farmer, wife of Carlo Bertolatti??

Daughter of deceased Domenico and deceased Teresa Decoroli ??

Many thanks,
John

John, the correct spelling of the mother's surname is Decaroli/De Caroli

Here's a loose translation, which I've roughly set out line by line, which you should be able follow alongside the Italian Record. Hopefully it will help you with future records. You were able to extract the vital information which is the most important, so that's great.

Death No 69: Catterina Maritano

Registered 5 September 1881,
before the official,
in the town of Sant'Ambrogio,

Appearing were Luigi Favretti,
33 yo, pristinaio (baker/miller),
living in S.Ambrogio, and Felice Ferrera,
50 yo, serviente (attendant), living in
S.Ambrogio, who reported that at 1.15 am,
today (oggi), in the house in Borgo Inferiore,
No 79, died Catterina Maritano, 48 yo, contadina, residing in
S. Ambrogio, born in S.Ambrogio,
(daughter) of the deceased (fu) Domenico, contadino, (who had) lived in
S.Ambrogio, and of the deceased (fu) Teresa Decaroli,
a contadina, (who had) lived in S.Ambrogio, wife
of Carlo Bertolatti.

Then it just ends with the names of the two witnesses to the registration of the death.

Hi Angela, very many thanks for your help with the translation, very much appreciated.

Over the last months many members have helped with translations and enabled me to pick up quite a few things from the records I find but still so much to learn...still struggle with variations in handwriting :), learned some more today with your hep (pristinaio - baker /miller)

My GGGG grandfather was a Domenico Maritano from Sant'Ambrogio, I haven't found out his wife's name yet or his children other than my GGG Grandfather Antonio, this record opens up a potential link and gives me somewhere / someone else to trace to see where I can find a link, if any.

Thank you so much,
John

Happy to help, John. I understand about the script. It can be a real challenge at times, but you are doing well.

Re your GGGG Domenico Maritano, are you able to link me to your tree or link me to the records that you already have that include his name. If you can't that's fine.

Hi Angela, my Tree is on MyHeritage but I have not saved the source links /records to it and only entered the 'basic' info there.
Here are the records that take me back to Domenico, this takes me back to Valgoiei where he was born but also to Sant'Ambrogio where his grandchild was born.

Marriage of Felice Antonio Dodero to Maria Domenica Maritano – she is the daughter of Antonio Maritano / Angela Listello (1879)

Death cert for child of Antonio Maritano and Angela Listello
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903 ... at=1019269

stating Antonio is child of Domenico Maritano but I don’t know if it gives Antonio’ mothers name. (1869)

Members of the forum helped find some certs as well as translate these for me.

Regards,
John

Ok, thanks John. No, Antonio's mother's name isn't mentioned in the death record there. Antonio's death record should list both parents names. As it seems he was living in Sant'Ambrogio, I've taken a quick look through those death records but no sign of Antonio or his wife Angela. I've gone to 1923 so far, and need to go back and check through some years that didn't have indices - you may possibily already have done this though. Antonio and Angela's marriage record would also list his parents names. The marriage would've taken place in Angela's birth town - Mocchie. (Pubblications would've been posted in both Valgoiei and Mocchie - it doesn't look like those records are on line though.)

Thank you, G. I did know these post 1866 were online. The ones I'm needing are prior to 1866 - the first child was born in 1866 in Sant'Ambrogio. I haven't looked through the death records in Mocchie or Valgioie yet as the family were living in Sant'Ambrogio. I will take a look there as well later just incase the death records were sent back. Antonio and Angela were still living in Sant'Ambrogio in 1879 when their daughter married.

Thanks again Angela, mmogno,
have been checking through the records, back and forth as I discover someone else :) and had been into those ones and will be again as I find more linked family members (hopefully). I have located the towns web pages and plan to contact them to ask where I can find more records.

Going through some of the records members had translated for me I can see that Antonio and Angela were listed as living in Borgone in 1895 when their daughter was re married in Chambery...

https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903 ... at=1019269

I have just checked and can see there are records available online for Borgone so I will make a start on these today to try and find death certs.

Thank you both once again, you have been very helpful, again.

kind regards,
John
