This is completely unrelated and not even my record, but I was wondering what kind of cab it was he would have driven, since cars weren't invented until 1885.

Great question. This has come up before on the forum, so you could search the forum. We generally translate it as a "cabman" but I've also seen vetturale being translated as a coachman and a carrier. In my notes I have written down that a "vetturale was a carrier of goods from place to place using a cart, wheelbarrow, or with pack animals - Erudita" On reflection, maybe a "carrier" would be a better translation given the timeframe?

Edit to Add:
Vetturale (Carrier): https://www.treccani.it/vocabolario/vetturale/

Edward, I'm pleased you found it interesting. I've never researched the occupation "vetturale" myself but have picked up on what others on the forum have said. You might find the following list of Italian Occupations helpful with your own research: http://freepages.rootsweb.com/~mmange/g ... ngocc.html

Ofcourse, it won't have all the occupations listed there. We are always coming across new ones in the civil records, or we see variations to the spellings of occupations, and/or they are written in dialect. I have a copy of this list on my desk top which I am forever updating as I come across new occupations/descriptions/info etc.
