Sicilian Birth Certificates

Post by seanplawson »

What is the best way to find Birth Certificates dating back to 1953? I'm trying to track my mothers down, with no real luck. Thanks

Hi! 1953 is a relatively early year when researching genealogy, so it's likely that her birth record won't be anywhere on the internet. Instead, you would probably have to email or write to the town where she was born and request her certificate. I've done this once by faxing a request form to the town where one of my ancestors was born and they gave me a copy of his birth certificate extract. So, it wasn't a picture of the official birth certificate, but it was a document containing all of the information on the original. However some towns I have requested certificates from have never answered me.

Due to Italian privacy laws, it is my understanding that a birth record as recent as 1953 won't be available online for 100 years, or until the year 2053. So you must write to, or fax, the particular town in question. If you provide us with the name of town, one of the volunteers on the forum can help you locate the correct contact info for the town.
