Registered in Oppido Mammertina on 12 November 1908

Groom: Giuseppe Donia, celibe (unmarried), 27 yo, contadino, born in Oppido, residing in Oppido, the son of Saverio Donia, residing in Oppido, and of Rosa Russo, residing in Oppido.

Thank you Angela, I am still trying to find out when and where Rosa Russo and Saverio Donia were married. And the correct spelling on my surname. I find both spellings on these records. Donia and Dunia, even over here in the United States. The Name was spelled Donia on my great grandfathers application for naturalization. After the 1920s it changed to Dunio. I am still going to search to see if I can find the answer.

In this marriage act it's clearly written Donia and the same in the spouse signature. If you say that also in the naturalization papers there was written Donia, it seems evident that any change, by mistake or intentionally, have been made in the US.

But the same mistake with the spelling has also been made in Italy. I have found mistakes on other records.

You are welcome, John. Usually the couple married in the bride's birth town, so if you haven't found Rosa's birth record, it is possible that she was born somewhere else. (The name Russo is and was found in Oppido Mammertina) I just rechecked the marriage indices going back from 1873 to 1866 inclusive - I think their first child was born in 1873? I didn't find a marriage record for them. I then checked that they weren't left off the indices, which does happen sometimes, but that doesn't seem to be the case either.

Re the name Donia/Dunia, the official/s would've just written down what they heard I guess. In this marriage record Giuseppe has signed his surname as "Donia" as Cedrone has noted.

As always, happy to help. I also had a look to see if there were any pubblications but there arn't any. Normally what happens if a bride and groom are born in different towns, the pubblications would be posted in both the bride's birth town and the groom's birth town, so that was my thinking behind looking for the pubblications. I can't really think of where to look next, at the moment.

I have not given up my search. I have been looking in towns close to Oppido Mamertina. I will find my answers. Just a matter of time.

Good on you!!! It could be a bit of a mission though. The name is everywhere, all over Italia, and also there were Russo's living in my hometown. Take a look at this: https://www.mappadeicognomi.it/en/index ... o&s=Search

My suggestion would be to look for her Death Record in Oppido if you haven't already done so. The Death Record should have both her birth town and also the names of her parents. If you have already looked for this, and not found it, then you could try sending an email to the town requesting her Death Record.

John, following on from my previous post here, just remember that it is quite possibile that her first name might not be Rosa. Earlier I went through the Oppido Birth Indices for the years 1846-1853 looking for any females with the surname Russo. There weren't that many. I looked at the actual Birth Record for the ones I did come across but only one had a marriage annotation which was for a Maria Teresa Russo marrying a Paolo in 1874.

In order of birth, what were the names of Saverio and Rosa's children?

Giacomo Donia 30 Dec 1873 Tresillico, Caterina was born in 1876 according to her death registry from Oppido Mamertina in 1878. And Giuseppe was born in 1881 in Oppido Mamertina. I have found out today that Giuseppe died 12 Oct 1918 here in Pennsylvania, United States. From the Influenza Pandemic. I will try to contact the Oppido Mamertina Authorities for helpon the deaths of Saverio and Rosa. Thank you Angela.

Ok. Thanks. That's what I had as well, after searching the records you have already posted on the forum. Because their first child was born in Tresillico I had a look through the Tresillico Marriage Records but no marriage was there for Saverio and Rosa.

So, looking at the names of the three children, the first two children were named after Saverio's parents, so I'm picking that "Giuseppe" was "possibily" named after Rosa's father(???) I decided to look at the birth records circa 1850 for Rosa's Birth Record anyway, just in case they were married elsewhere, and hoping there was a Birth Record there for Rosa, with an annotation, but there wasn't. I did however find the following "possibility", but that's all it is, a "possibility". There's no proof. I'll post it anywhere and you can just shelve it for now. (I couldn't find a marriage record for this Maria Rosa....Russo either. She may have died as an infant, remained unmarried or married much later than I searched.)

Possible birth of Rosa Russo

4 December 1851, Birth in Tresilico: Maria Rosa Filippa Francesca Russo

Father Giuseppe Russo
Mother Serafina Zappavigna
