Tenant Farmer

As a nation state, Italy has emerged only in 1871. Until then the country was politically divided into a large number of independant cities, provinces and islands. The currently available evidences point out to a dominant Etruscan, Greek and Roman cultural influence on today's Italians.

Tenant Farmer

Would the owner of a garden (giardino) in an estate (feudo) be referred to as a tenant farmer (colono)?

I'm especially interested with regard to land practices in Sicily in the early 1800s.

As a follow-up, what's the difference between "colono" and "coltivato di campagna"?

Which one would be more likely to own land in a feudo?
