Birth No 89: Caterina Mazzaferro

Registered in the town of Grotteria on 8 August 1853

Francesco Mazzaferro, 36 yo, vaticale (cab driver), living in Grotteria, presented a baby girl, who he reported was born this morning, at 8 am in his own house, in Rione Pisciotto. She was born from himself, the declarant and his legitimate wife Rosa Oppedisano, a contadina, 26 yo, the daughter of Gennaro. The baby was given the name Caterina and was baptised on 8 August 1853 in the Church of Matrice.

Rione is another name for neighbourhood.

(Because the ink has blotted a little it makes it quite difficult in places.)

Thank you Angela! I know that these are difficult to read, more so if you can't speak Italian. Thanks.

I've just realised that I translated Vaticale/Viaticale as a Cab Driver, out of old habit, without rechecking. The occupation was also known as a Hauler, a Water Carrier etc. Basically, he was a person who transported goods for other people - so a "Carrier". If you are ever unsure about an occupation, you can always check here on the forum as a lot of the occupations have been discussed and researched here at other times. You may even find some old photos of various occupations. The forum has a lot of really good info on it.
