What is segni of the abandoned child?

Abandoned children are often left with items (signs/segni) that will help identify the child if/when the child is reclaimed by the parent(s).

What I read here is Stracci = rags.

Molto grazie.

This is sad. I thought that I could tell a co-worker that, at the very least, his 3x great grandmother left some sign to reclaim the child (his great-great-grandfather).

Very disheartening.
