Colombo/Tinto/DeVito Families-New Rochelle, New York
I'm trying to find some info on my grandparents and great grandparents. With all the family gone I don't know where to search for answers and was hoping someone on the board would remember them or give me a clue on how to go about finding info on them. I know that my grandparent were born in Italy and that they lived on 4th street in New Rochelle. There were 12 children in the family. I have no idea where in Italy they were born. I do remember my dad talking about it but back then, I had no interest. I do have my grandparents dealth certificicate and their obituary but they don't tell me much. It does tell me that my great grandmother Carmella (DeVito) Tinto was still alive when my grandmother died in 1942 when I was 2 years old but don't remember her.. She may have lived in New Rochelle but I'm not sure. My great grandfathers name was Michael Tino but don't know when he died.
I have been trying for 2 or 3 years to learn something about them and found out a little...but right now, I'm at a stand still. Any help or ideas that you can give me would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Judy

Re: Colombo/Tinto/DeVito Families-New Rochelle, New York
My grandmothers mother's name was Carmella Tinto. Her maiden name was De Vito. I believe that Carmella had 3 children. My grandmother Angelina, Nicholas, Samuel, and Charles. My grandmother Angelina was born abt February 22, 1888.
My grandfather Domenico/Dominick fathers name was Matteo, his mothers name was Maria D Vaccaro with Vaccaro being her maiden name. My grandfather Domenico was born abt April 26, 1872. My grandfather worked for the City of New Rochelle and they had a big house on 4th Street in New Rochelle. He died January 11, 1950 while my grandmother Angelina died October 2, 1947. I also know that my grandparents are buried in New Rochelle. I have no idea where my great greatparents are buried. My grandparents were born in Italy but can't find a Port of Entry for them anywhere or where they lived in Italy. I know that they lived in New Rochelle for 60 years before their death.
Thanks for any help that anyone could give me. Since I was very when they died, I never got to know my grandparents and want to know about them.

but just one thing...
Where does Colombo fit in??
Maria
Thanks all for responding. Colombo was my father's last name. Also my grandfather Domenico and greatgrandfathers Matteo's last name.
My fathers brother's and sisters names are Michael, Martin, Nicholas, John, Louis, Eugene, Nina, Marey and Millie. The family house was on 129 4th Street, New Rochelle, NY.
I'm sure that my grandmother had Samuel and Nicholas both of Yonkers NY in 1942, Charles Tinto of Brookfield, CT in 1942 and a sister, Mrs Nicholas Vaccaro of New Rochelle in 1942 because I do have both my grandparents obituary. The obits list their wedding date as November 4, 1901 in New Rochelle but when I sent away for their wedding certificate, there was no record of it. Obit also list my greatgrandmother Mrs Carmella (De Vito) Tinto as being alive when my grandmother died in 1942.
Such a mystery. My mother always said that the Colombo family were not honest about their ages and I remember my aunts and uncles being very quiet people. My father would have told me if I asked, but back then, I had no interest in knowing my history. Now that they all passed, their is no one to question.

Not sure about the manifest...of 1889 Matteo Tinchitella (though interesting..)
His eldest son appears to be US born... 1886.. unless he went back to Italy for whatever reason...
??? I don't know... could be wrong...

Re: Colombo/Tinto/DeVito Families-New Rochelle, New York
Very, very interesting. I'm getting confused with the name change. The name change came on the Tinto side of the family correct? According to all my records my grandmothers father's name was Michael Tinto and not Matteo and yet you found a Matteo Tinchitella? I take it that Matteo means Martin in English since I had an Uncle Martin? Where does the Matteo Tinchitella come in. I'm assuming that this my gramdmothers father? How sure are you of the name change? It wouldn't surprise me. I remember my mother saying something about the Colombo's changing their last name. She might have meant the Tinto's on grandmothers side.
The census of the family at 129th 4th Street is right on the money. My dad was Dominick. The family house on 4th Street was sold when Antonette and John died about 5-6 years ago. Many of the brothers and sisters never married and the house was kept and all lived in it until their deaths. I spent many Sundays in the house as a child.
I also take it that if the manifest from Castle Garden is my ancestors that they came from Sala-Consilina. I never heard that mentioned but remember Naples being mentioned but can't remember if my dad said that is where the family came from.
