Hi y'all,
My mother successfully applied for Italian citizenship through one of her Italian ancestors when I was a minor. Since she had spent a lot of money on translating and notarizing certificates, she decided not to have my birth certificate translated and lied about being childless.
Now that I am an adult, do I have any recourse to rectify this situation? I would like to obtain citizenship without going through the whole searching + translating ordeal, as that is what would have corresponded had my mother done things properly.
I know lying about not having children is a crime, but I am unaware of the possible repercussions. If I pursue this further, is there any chance she is criminally prosecuted? Could she go to jail or have her citizenship stripped?
She regrets her actions and wants to help me, but we are unsure how to go forward.
Thanks
Mother lied when applying for citizenship. Do I have any options?

Well, in Italy lying to a public officer IS a felony, carrying a penalty between one and six years in jail.

Thing is, reporting your mother to the Italian authorities will not incide on the fact that, as an adult, now you have to file your application for Italian citizenship. However, if you live in the area served by the same Consular office where your mother obtained her citizenship, you can inform them that the relevant documents are already on file there, so there is no need to submit them again.

As rreew noted, you can use the documents submitted to the consulate by your mom if you are applying at the same consulate. If not, you will need a full document set. But don’t worry about your mom. She applied without listing her minor children, which meant they weren’t registered in AIRE. The omission is easily corrected.
