Are any Italian-Americans here who have moved to Sicily permanently and would care to comment on how life would be for an American ex-pat - adjustments, pluses and minuses - especially in retirement?
Issues like reception by natives, language, housing, cost of living, healthcare, culture shock, weather, safety, transportation, etc.
I visited only once (in October-November) and it was a very pleasant experience. I don't know anyone there, and any relatives I would have there are 3rd cousins or more distant, although my surname is known in the hometown (Melilli) and province (Siracusa).
I think I would qualify for Italian citizenship (my father was born in the U.S. before my grandfather became naturalized) but I have no plans to apply.
