married or not

Post by dmt1955 »

if all other acts in a death registry use the terms moglie / marito / vedova / vedovo ...then....there is one record in which the phrase "coniugato con...." is used....would i be accurate in assuming that they were not married although residing together.

thanks,
donna

thanks angela for your thinking...

i do know that what it translates to is "conjugated with," and, in other records, usually earlier ones, that means married....however, this one act stands out against all 337 others.....they are written by same clerk and there is a consistency with everything else...doesn't give date of death - uses terms such as stamane, ieri l'altro, etc. and for the parents of decedents, uses "vita in" never uses 'fu' and there is no question that means dead. so, it makes me highly suspicious.....hummmm

happy new year, by the way.

Very warm greetings and a Happy New Year to you also Donna.

Re the record, unless he has made an error by writing the word "coniugato" which as you say means "married", I would say that the person he was "joined with" was his legal wife - they were married. To be honest, I can't recall ever seeing a death record which included a "defacto"? relationship. I'm still trying to understand what "common law marriages" actually were. Someone told me that they were like a "defacto marriage" but I've never seen the "defacto" partner included in the death record of the "defacto" spouse in early civil records, that I can recall.

Are you able to link us to the relevant "online" record. The online record is better, then I'll be able to flick through the other death records.

Best to you.

For what it's worth the literal meaning from the Latin is "with yoke", again suggesting actual marriage.

Where in Italy?

Maybe the person reporting the death happened to use the word "coniugato" and the clerk just repeated it, whereas he usually would have used a different term?

Have you searched marriage records for that person?

i appreciate each of your thoughts on this.

angela, at least in ariano, there are many birth records that distinguish between married and living together. could be as simple as church ceremony vs. civil ceremony when things got changed around.

always interesting finds in these records. fortunately, i have only two decades of death records left and i will have indexed all records from the town (right know about 130k+).
