Approximate date of picture

Post by telesino »

I need a little help from car aficionados in trying to get an approximate date for this photo. hopefully the model year of the car will help pin point that date. things i know: the adults were born between 1900-1910, the little boy 1920.

I think there's a license plate above the bumper - if the original image is bigger, maybe you can see the numbers on it.

unfortunately the image was not originally scanned at a high enough resolution to enlarge and still be clear. that was my first attempt in trying to pin point a date.

It's a 1929 or 1930 Model A Ford. It appears to be pretty new based on the condition. That seems to support the age of the boy based on birthdate.

I think Mark's right. The back end of this 1927 Ford looks like the one in your picture. The trunk of both cars opens the same way - backward. Maybe both cars are convertibles, because each has the same bent metal armature behind the driver's window. Maybe that's there to fold the roof down?

The back "hatch" is a "rumble seat". It IS in fact the convertible model. My grandfather started working at the Ford assembly plant in Highland Park (Detroit) Michigan in 1913, about the time the assembly line was first put into operation. He retired from there at age 65 in 1956. In all those years, he never learned to drive a car himself.

He walked, took the streetcar or rode with someone else...

Looks like a 1930-31 MY based on the Cowl shape.

thank all of you for your information. my great-grandfather Antonio Pacelli, father of several in the picture, passed away in 1933. His nephew in the picture would have driven from Connecticut to western PA. i am beginning to suspect he was there visiting family for the funeral.
