Useful Tool for Surnames

Post by MinnieB »

I'm fairly new to genealogy research, so maybe a lot of you are already familiar with this tool, but I'll post it for other newbies. It is a search on surnames in Italy by region.

http://italia.indettaglio.it/eng/cognomi/cognomi.html

I have found this to be immensely helpful when trying to decipher the handwriting for a name. Sometimes only a portion of the name is readable. Say, for example, the last 4 letters. So, I put the last 4 letters of the name into the box next to the region I'm researching and choose the "contains" radio button then search. A list of names in that region will appear containing those letters. Then I compare the list to what I am unable to decipher and usually, I can then figure out the name.

Hopefully, this will be useful to someone else.
