Is MtDNA passed down from mother to son?
If yes, is it the same MtDNA which is passed down from mother to daughter?

Re: MtDNA
YES. The difference is it ends with the son. The daughter passes it on.darkerhorse wrote: 13 May 2022, 20:24 Is MtDNA passed down from mother to son?

Re: MtDNA
Yes, mitochondrial DNA (MtDNA) is passed down from mother to both her sons and daughters.
- From mother to son: Sons inherit their MtDNA directly from their mother, but they do not pass it on to their offspring. Therefore, MtDNA is not passed down further through male descendants.
- From mother to daughter: Daughters also inherit MtDNA from their mother. Similarly, daughters pass down the MtDNA they received from their mother to their own offspring, continuing the maternal lineage.
In summary, MtDNA is inherited maternally in both sons and daughters, but only daughters pass it on to the next generation. This characteristic makes MtDNA a useful tool in studying maternal ancestry and evolutionary history.
