Jure Sanguinis - Divorce Certificate or Judgment Needed

Over 25 million Italians have emigrated between 1861 and 1960 with a migration boom between 1871 and 1915 when over 13,5 million emigrants left the country for European and overseas destinations.

Jure Sanguinis - Divorce Certificate or Judgment Needed

Post by JonJCurtoJr »

We are obtaining our Italian Citizenship through my paternal-grandfather, who was born in Italy in 1885 and was never naturalized as a US citizen after immigrating sometime around 1906.

My father was married once prior to being married to my mother, but had no children from his first marriage.

My question is: Do I need the "Divorce Judgment" of my father's first marriage or will a "Certificate of Judgment of Divorce" from the City Clerk where the divorce occurred be sufficient for my citizenship application with the Italian Consulate in Miami?

I have already obtained the Certificate, but there is some question as to whether or not the Certificate will suffice and that I may actually need the Judgment itself?

To obtain the Judgment, the City Clerk in NYC informed me that I will need to hire an attorney to petition the courts to release the Divorce Judgment.

Thank you for your help in advance.
