Italian Dual Citizenship Maternal GGM -1948 Judicial Procedure

Over 25 million Italians have emigrated between 1861 and 1960 with a migration boom between 1871 and 1915 when over 13,5 million emigrants left the country for European and overseas destinations.

Italian Dual Citizenship Maternal GGM -1948 Judicial Procedure

Post by FrankCMauro »

Hi,
I am pursuing my Italian Citizenship through my maternal great grandmother, Maria Collazzo.
She was born in Italy 1866, immigrated to America in 1893, and was married to my great grandfather Francesco Mauro in 1893, in Manhattan, New York.
Francesco Mauro became an American citizen in 1909.
My grandfather Antonio Mauro was born in Manhattan, New York in 1888.
My dad born in Queens, New York in 1916, and myself born in Queens, New York 1948.
I understand that I would have to go through a judicial procedure to obtain me citizenship.
Cn anyone recommend a good Italian lawyer, or law firm?
Does anyone have any idea of the cost?
What might be the time frame?
Thank you in advance for any information you might be able to give me.
Sincerely,
Frank C. Mauro

Paiano, Grasso, Bersani, and ICA are the names of attorneys that I usually hear.

Hi there!

I signed a contract with Italian Citizenship Assistance. They’ve been absolutely wonderful. They have a youtube channel with the same name if you’d like more info about them. My case worker was able to correct an error that I made that could have set me back an entire year. We are always in contact and they patiently answer all my questions. I’m very happy with them. I’m about a year into the process, also a 1948 case. We are still in the document-collection phase (UCSIS takes about a year to get a doc you need).

Good luck!

Hi JTSD20!

You posted this a while ago but I was wondering if you had an update on your process with ICA. How did things go? Also, would you mind sharing a list of the documents ICA advised that you would need? Or even send it in a PM if that works better for you. I have a family member with a similar 1948 path and want to ensure they are gathering all the necessary docs.

Thanks in advance!

Hi there @taxi55! Just saw this. I was on a break from the Italian citizenship boards to preserve my sanity. I have a 1948 case in Naples Court on March 20, 2025. It was originally scheduled for July 5, 2024 but the judge set a second court date (no explanation provided).

Hi and thanks @JTSD20! I can relate to the above…

Sorry to hear about your court delay- I hear that is happening a lot with cases.

Are you still content with using ICA?
Are you able to share the list of records/documents they required?
How particular are they with having corrections made for document discrepancies/inconsistencies?

We haven’t selected an attorney/company yet (they are all swamped with requests.)

Best of luck to you in March.

I’m using ICA, they have been excellent. Court date for my case is October 2025 in Catanzaro.

Initially it took 6 months + to retain them due to the number of inquiries they had, but the process started in late 2020. The pandemic also slowed down the document retrieval process but I’m hoping for the citizenship to be complete by the end of the year.

Hello,

I am also evaluating ICA, but the price quote is incredibly high >13k euro for GM pre 1948. That seems high for full service plus out of pocket. My father was a minor when GM naturalized.

What have they quoted for an estimated timeline?

I retained ICA in 2020, and they had tiered pricing; I went with the highest one at the time, which I believe they called "Executive," and it was around what you noted for the cost. If I could do it over again, I would do the same since my case was a 1948 case with many document issues (spelling of names) and knowing how to obtain documents best and connect the dots.

You do not need to pay 100% upfront; they split mine into three installments, and I have not yet paid the last one and probably will after my court date in October.

Also, note that there might be additional fees for obtaining documents from case to case.

I did not have the "Minor" issue; it just turned into a 1948 case with a lot of documents and court orders required to obtain name corrections for my deceased GF's birth certificate.
