D in front of name on record

Post by billoms »

I have noted in a death record and a marriage record of both man and wife with a capital D. in front of their names is this an abbreviation of Don or Dona denoting honorable person?

I would guess, yes. I've seen it used that way before. Less common for females.

Perhaps Donna (not Dona) when spelled out?

Don (male) and Donna ( female).. a ancient word of respect for a respectable person, which in ancient times was used to indicate belonging to a noble class, but then it fell and was used vulgarly and only orally, even by very humble social classes. Instead, if written, it indicated a respectable and notable person. If a person was Noble, then it was spelled: or N.U. (Nobil Uomo/Noble Man) and if she was a woman (Nobil Donna/Noble Woman).
Don /Donna, it originates from the Latin word Dominus which means Lord/Lady.

Attached are death records for the individuals I was inquiring about. It appears they died two days apart, 11 jul 1892 and 13 jul 1892. They are written in latin. Can you please help me with the translations. I am most interested in age and if an address is listed but all info is welcomed
Thank you in advance
