I need help finding where my great grandfather was born

Post by Cassie119300 »

Hello,
I've been at the ancestry thing for quite a while now and I managed to find my great grandfather's naturalization certificate. No one really knows exactly what part of Italy he is from just that it may have been sorrento, salerno, somewhere in that region. On his naturalization certificate he wrote a place that looks like "carotti/garotti" and I cannot figure it out for the life of me, I don't know what his parents name's were. He immigrated over to the USA when he was a boy and had two sisters and one brother as well in the USA with him that I know of. His name was Antonio (Anthony) J. Romano also nicknamed Charlie. I have another document saying his birth place was Sorrento, but I have not been able to find his birth record or his parents names sadly.

He was put in St Johns Home for boys which I contacted but I have not heard back from as I found a record with his name. My grandmother would say "vesuvias a lot" unfortunately I never got a chance to ask, I just always knew my great grandfather immigrated from Italy, both him and my great grandmother met through being in an orphanage and ended up together years later.

There was also mention that my great grandfather could not stand the smell of wine or being anywhere near it as he remembered before he immigrated he couldn't stand the smell of his father's wine factory... which I have no clue what the name of it was.

Very far fetched here but I wanted to see if anyone could offer any tips, I'm trying so hard to find the parent's names and the actual place my great grand father and his siblings were from but unfortunately it is hard to locate. I know his one sister is Amelia Romano, A brother Joseph, and a sister named Erminia or Armenia. I only have a photo of his sister Amelia but I've never seen any of Erminia.

Last residence was Piano di Sorrento but you only posted the first page of the manifest. The town of birth is usually on the second page.

Yes, his place of birth is Piano di Sorrento, which in Neapolitan is "Caruotto"

From wiki
Piano di Sorrento (Neapolitan: Caruotto) is a comune (municipality) in the Metropolitan City of Naples

Cassie,

The information here will provide perhaps too much of a good thing, for you to sort through. There are no two dots connected by a straight line.

You can see that Antonio was travelling with two relatives, all headed for Raffaele Romano at 1517 Dean St (in Brooklyn). Perhaps the Piano di Sorrento thread can be found running through Raffaele and his family, who are found at this address on the 1910 census, although Antonio is not. His address on the naturalization document, 1520 Bergen Street, is in the same neighborhood. Looking at a few Raffaele Romano transits prior to that of Antonio gives

Romano, Raffaele Age: 59 Birth:1834-1835
Ship: Bolivia Arrival: Oct 31 1894
From: "Pianodi Sezzento"
Destination: New York - no address given

Romano, Raffaele Age: 72 Birth:1827-1828 Married
Ship: Archimede Arrival: Aug 06 1900
From: "Piano/Sorrento"
Destination: son Pietro, 46 DeGraw St. (the spelling is muffed on the manifest)

This Raffaele Romano of 46 DeGraw St, in turn, had immigrated to his son Pietro, who had earlier arrived with his son Salvatore:

Romano, Pietro Age: 37 Birth: 1865-1866 Married
Romano, Salvatore (son) Age: 10 Birth: 1893-1894
Ship: Umbria (1902) Arrival: Jul 28 1903
From: "Piano di So."
Destination: Home, 46-48 DeGraw St. Brooklyn (Raffaele may have been back and forth to Italy)

A later Pietro immigrant did not have a destination address specified:

Romano, Pietro Age: 55 Birth: 1866-1867 Married
Ship: Presidente Wilson Arrival: May 15 1922
From: "Piano Sorrento, Italy"

There's a good chance that people on these transits are part of a family related to Antonio, (who I have trouble locating in either the 1910 or 1920 census).

Here is a more thorough Ellis Island list of family candidate Romanos emigrating from Piano di Sorrento:

1910 Census

-------------------------------------------------------
From the above list of transits, there are two sisters, Emilia and Eluisa Romano on the Sant' Anna arriving October 4, 1910:
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903 ... cc=1368704

You will need to use FamilySearch's image adjustment tools (go waaay bright and bump up the contrast) to verify the index info for them on lines 25-26. They are travelling with a Maria Eposito line 24; I totally cannot read her relationship to the girls. Some of the markings on Emilia's line (8/19/41) may be indication of her becoming naturalized around that date.

-----------------------------
A little more information on Antonio's family, especially wife's maiden name, could help. Are either of these the wedding document?

Oops! That's what happens too late at night.

A mistake about this arrival that I'd mentioned:

Romano, Pietro Age: 37 Birth: 1865-1866 Married
Romano, Salvatore (son) Age: 10 Birth: 1893-1894
Ship: Umbria (1902) Arrival: Jul 28 1903
From: "Piano di So."
Destination: Home, 46-48 DeGraw St. Brooklyn ("Raffaele" may have been back and forth to Italy)

I should have noted that it seems that Pietro (not Raffaele) had been back and forth to Italy; in other words, (as shown by the 1900 census link provided) he was already living at DeGraw St. by the time of his father Raffaele's arrival in 1900.

Thank you all so much for your help I have got to say I was not expecting anything near what you have all found. The mystery of the province for instance, absolutely amazing.... I am so thankful that was answered. I actually plan to be going to Sorrento in June with my soon to be husband and will be travelling around the area. Maybe even get to explore the archives there! So to help with a bit of information, I just recently found out from connecting with a family member on Ancestry, there was about 13 siblings in total that immigrated all together. As far as we know their parents never came over and we're not sure why. My great grandfather Anthony Romano ended up in an Orphanage as well as his Sister Amelia (only those two as far as I know). He was in the St Joseph's Home where he met my great grandmother Anna Ludden (yes that was the right name). I am very greatful also for the second page of the manifest unfortunately I was not able to retrieve the second page at the time, I had only found the first page I think I found it through Ancestry but then the trial ran out or something.

There is one brother my mother said that is supposed to have come from different parents than all of the other siblings. Mathilda Campa and Oneillios Romano have got to be my great grandfather's parents listed on the marriage certificate.

I have a number of possible sibling names my grandmother had memorized and some potential I think. Unfortunately it is not known to us most of the names, my great grandfather never talked much about anything personal and neither did his sister Amelia. I believe they had a sister named Filomena Romano Demarchi who stayed behind in Italy as a Nun and I found out recently, whom entered the convent at 13 years old.

Amelia Romano later married and became Amelia Festa. I see a name for a Guiseppi Romano from Borgetto, Siciliy, Italy which is a bit confusing to me.

Then other names such as:

1. Albino Joseph Romano
2. Antonio A Romano
3. Giovanni Romano
underneath this name was (Florida Prov. Siracusa Italy)
4. Joseph D Romano
5. Lucia Amna Giglio Romano

My mother is adamant that she remembers my grandmother saying my great grandfather Anthony Joseph Romano had a brother named Antonio Romano who died from falling off a building. So I'm not sure what my great grandfather's actual birth name was then if he always went by Anthony.

Other information says Brothers- Joseph, Robert, Antonio - Died fell off building

Sis- Amelia, Erminia, Ferminia (Nun in Italy), Louise- died young had 2 sons

Anthony's father owned a winery in Sorrento Naples.
I also heard information recently through the family member on Ancestry that they were supposed to have all shared an apartment in Sorrento Italy as well.

and something about someone named Danny who died in 1976 I believe.

I will definitely be looking more into all of this information further I have just been a bit busy with wedding planning at the moment.

Thank you all so much for your help!

Hello everyone, I was recently on my honeymoon and visited Sorrento and Piano Di Sorrento. I found a birth certificate within Piano Di Sorrento for my great grandfather Antonio Romano as well as one of his sisters and one of his brothers. His father's real name was Agnello Romano and his Mother's real name was Matilde Ciampa, it says on one of the documents that they were married and that the father owned a shop and the mother was a housewife. They lived at 33 Via Cassano where she gave birth to these three children. There are supposed to be at least 10 other siblings but the other dates I gave to the office came back empty for anyone. I cannot seem to find any records of marriage, birth, or death for Agnello Romano or Matilde Ciampa or what his job occupation really was. On two of the document's it says he was not present for the birth and was far away but a midwife was present who also went with Matilde Ciampa to register the births. I'm trying to find any more information I possibly can. There was also supposed to be a sister who stayed behind who entered into the Convent. We still to this day are not sure why all of the children emigrated over to Ellis Island or what happened to the parents.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Sure thing, I apologize in advance about Arturo and my Great Granfather Antonio's document, they are a bit difficult to read. The staff at the hotel kindly helped my husband and I translate most of it. Thank you.
