Rosa was born on Sept 19, 1844 in her own house to Maestro (title) Paolo Gaita, age 34, a fabriciere (church council member) and his wife, Antonina Sunseri, age 28. She was baptized on the 19th.

Thank you Erudita. I couldn’t quite read that word Maestro and was wondering if that was his name. Didn’t realize it was a title.
Re: Interpretation Of Birth Record For Rosa Gaita
You're welcome, Joe. It looks like an abbreviation to me. If I'm wrong, I honestly don't know what else it would be. Also, I'm not sure the title (which means he was "master of his trade") goes with Paolo's occupation.

I agree that the abbreviation is for the word Maestro but I don't think the occupation is "church council member". I'm wondering whether they have mispelt the word and that it should be fabbriciere (locksmith). Anyways, if it isn't locksmith my thinking is he was a "maker/buildinger" of something. That's my take.

Re: Interpretation Of Birth Record For Rosa Gaita
I don't agree with "locksmith" as a translation for the occupation in this record. I have now spent days trying to research this occupation and everything is pointing to it being related to the church or religious institutions. The Brigham Young occupation list even translates the word as “vestryman.” It seems that the occupation involved the maintenance, and possibly even the construction, of religious buildings-be it a cathedral, a convent, etc. In this capacity, this individual would have also been a member of a church council to the extent that he was a lay or secular individual who had a say in making decisions concerning the construction and/or maintenance of these buildings and, as such, probably dealt with budgets, or the costs for such maintenance or construction. Being in this position, in turn, would mean that he had previously worked in a building trade occupation-he could have been an architect, an engineer, or possibly a “master” bricklayer. So the title “maestro” may have carried over from a previous occupation of his and, as to dealing with money matters for the church, I’ve also read that certain religious groups, such as the Franciscans, were prohibited from dealing with money matters. So a lay or secular individual was needed to deal with such matters for them.

Here is the 1835 marriage record of "Maestro" Paolo Gaita and Antonina Sunseri which may help with the deliberations about Paolo's occupation:
https://antenati.cultura.gov.it/ark:/12 ... 34/586Ky9O
At age 25 he was referred to as "Maestro" Paolo Gaita, "fabricere" son of "Maestro" Ignazio Gaita, "fabricere". So father and son both held the occupation "fabricere" .............
I always appreciate your research.

Angela located the marriage record, not me, so you have her to thank for it. Unfortunately, we still have no definitive answer as to why the title Maestro appears in front of the occupation. I've seen a few instances of the two words together on the internet but nothing to explain the use of the title in conjunction with the occupation.
