Help with birth record

Post by phunk311 »

In pursuit of Italian dual citizenship I am in search of my great grandmother's birth record. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to find out her exact birth date or place of birth. Census records have her immigration year all over the place and last name is typically misspelled (Mesise, Maziska) . I have ordered a copy of her death certificate from the NJ Archives, but they are about a month away from completing the search.

Here is the information I do know:

Name: Anna Grieco
Spouse's Name: Luigi Antonio Misischia
Birth year: 1885 or 1886
Birth location: Italy
Immigration year: 1897, 1901, or 1902
Year married: 1904, Jersey City, NJ
Death: Mar 1934
Children: Frank, Frederick, John, Anthony, Mary, Emily

Miscischia seems to be a typical name of Agnone, Molise.
Now, I've found just one Anna Grieco born and arrived in the year ranges you mentioned.
This is her ship manifest:

She was from Scapoli, Molise.
Of course, there's nothing proven, but it might be a direction to try.

Also, do you have their marriage?

@PippoM, Thanks for your response. Agnone is where my great-grandfather Luigi was born. I only have the year of marriage and record number so far. I have a search request with the NJ Archives for their marriage certificate which should contain her parents names and birth locations.

@mmogno, Thanks for your response. This will come in handy when I make the request to the commune.

I'll let you all know as soon as I have either her marriage certificate or death certificate which should reveal whether we have the right person!

No death certificate yet, but I just received her marriage certificate. Her parents were Arsenio and Maria Lemma. I found her brother, Arsenio, on a ship manifest in 1914 which listed his mother as Maria and his sister as Anna. The address he gave for Anna was consistent with where my grandparents lived in NJ. I assumed she was born in the same commune as her brother so I searched the 1885 birth records for Sant'Arsenio and found Anna Greco DOB 10 Jan 1885.

I've gone down quite a few rabbit holes and hit a dead end. I have Anna's death certificate and marriage certificate (see below). I don't think I have the right birth record as the Anna I found was born to an unmarried woman. Please help!
