The Pelligra Family history

Post by apitaloaus »

Hi All,

I'm trying see how far back I can trace my family surname which hails from Pachino, Sicily.

My bis nonno, Concetto Pelligra, was born in 1896 and I found the record which indicated his parents to be Gregorio Pelligra and Mattia Scala. I have this attached.

Information about Gregorio Pelligra and his father and his father etc is what I'm wishing to find.
Any help what so ever would be so gratefully appreciated :)

The record lists his father's age as 25, so look for his birth record around 1871.

Also look for the parents' marriage record working back from 1896.

That's great, thank you both so much.

Tessa, I don't know how you managed to interpret the record from 1871, it was so faint for me!

I tried finding Giuseppe's birth record given he would have been born between 1840 - 1842 given his son Gregorio's record stating he was 30yo at the time. However, I couldn't find him in 1840 or 41.
The 1842 record is very hard to understand so I haven't been able to confirm if he is in there.
Would anyone have better skill than me to decipher!?

1864 Marriage No 36 Giuseppe Peligra/Pelligra and Michela Cultrera

Promise 16 December 1864
Married in the church on 23 December 1864

Groom: Giuseppe Peligra/Pelligra, unmarried, 18 yo, born in Pachino, a villico, living in Pachino, son of Gregorio, a villico, living in Pachino and of Grazia Novello, industriosa, living in Pachino

Bride Michela Cultrera, widow, 18 yo, industriosa, born and living in Pachino, daughter of Concetto, a villico and of Santa Rizza, industriosa, living in Pachino.

The marriage record states Giuseppe’s mother to be Grazia Novello while the index states it to be Ignazia, as does the the following record. You’ll notice a few spelling variations in the surnames as well.

Here is the Processetti for the 1864 marriage of Giuseppe and Michela: https://antenati.cultura.gov.it/ark:/12 ... 73/0M3NKQg

Giuseppe was born in 1846 and his mother's name was in Ignazia: https://antenati.cultura.gov.it/ark:/12 ... 73/031xKAZ

(I'll locate the original birth record to make sure of the mother's given name as often the extracts have errors though.)

Here is the original 1846 birth record: https://antenati.cultura.gov.it/ark:/12 ... 50/5ggYEQy

The spelling of Giuseppe’s surname in the birth record differs a lot from the spelling in the marriage record and subsequent records? His mother’s name was Ignazia, not Grazia. He was born in Pachino on 4 January 1846 to Gregorio, 36 yo, bovaro, and Ignazia Novello, his wife, 28 yo, and was given the name Giuseppe. (I’m wondering whether they may not have submitted the correct record?) Maybe a second set of eyes.

These two death records will take you back yet another generation for each.

Death No 73 – Gregorio Pellegra

Registered Pachino 18 September 1869, died the same day at 6 am in his own home in Pachino – Strada della Liberta. He was 57 yo, a bovaro, living in Pachino, the husband of Ignazia Norello, the son of the deceased Giuseppe Pellegra and of the deceased Giovanna Cavarra. Not sure of the place of birth - Spaccaso?

Death No 13 Ignazia Novella
Registered 1 February 1870, Pachino

Ignazia Novella died on 31 January 1870, at 3 am in Pachino, in the house she lived in Strada della Liberta. She was 50 yo, the widow of Gregorio Peligra/Pellegra, born and living in Pachino, the daughter of deceased Antonino Novello and of the deceased Rosaria Piccione?

Thank you so much Angela, you're a gem as always! I don't know how you can interpret these records, it is so difficult for me compared to the others i've come across.

I wonder then if there's any way of locating any records on Giuseppe Pelligra (Gregorio's father)?

I just tried finding Giuseppe's death record between 1820 (as that was the earliest I could access) and 1869 as that was the year his son died and which stated he had already passed.
There were a few years i found difficult to search though and I have an untrained eye, so I may have missed it.
the following years were the hardest for me to search through:
1830 - 32.
1842 - 43.
1847.
1849.

Hi there

We really need to determine where Gregorio (husband of Ignazia Novello) was born. I am understanding his death record to state that he was born elsewhere. Initially I thought it read Spaccaso, but now looking again at the record, with fresh eyes, I think it reads Spaccafo, and I don’t know where that is, but it “might” be referring to Spaccaforno (today known as Ispica) in the province of Rugusa. (It is quite some distance away tho?) Anyways, if that is the case then that is where you will probably find his father Giuseppe Pellegra and mother Giovanna Cavarra’s death records, unless they moved to Pachino as well? Interesting is that I have not been able to find Gregorio Pellegra and Ignazia Novello’s marriage record in Pachino, and I also went through two years page by page that were missing indices. With optimism, I also looked through the indices in Ispica but didn’t see it there. (The surnames were definitely there though, although Pellegra was spelt differently there.)

What you might want to do, is search for other children born to Gregorio and Ignazia. There may have been other children born to them, and if they had gone on to marry then there may be a death record included in the allegati pertaining to paternal grandfather Giuseppe Pellegra.

I'll take a look at these later. Yes, some of the records are really tricky to read and faded as well. You are doing well.

Re your comment about there being no civil records before 1820, there are church records on Family Search for Pachino here: https://www.familysearch.org/search/cat ... %20Library
Civil records didn’t being until 1820 in Sicily.

Thank you so much Angela and Tessa, I really appreciate your efforts.
I've tried looking over these documents and even some the church records - they are just beyond me in terms of comprehending what they say.

Hopefully one of you have much better luck than me finding another clue!

I've been trying to find Gregorio Pelligra (born 1871 and married to Mattia Scala) death year but no luck.
I couldn't access 1915 - 1929 as familysearch kept saying it couldn't load the images....
