Hi Nicholas and Joan
I believe this is your Calogero here. (Calogero Roseto) His parents marriage record says that they were legitimising a baby boy that was born on what looks to be 20 March 1879 and who was given the name Calogero Roseto, born to unknown parents. I checked 1879 and because I knew he was born circa 1869 figured it was an error.
Birth No 106 Calogero Roseto: https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903 ... cc=2043548
From the record, it looks like he was born 19? March 1869. Hopefully - Mystery solved!!!

Hi Erudita
I've just found it. Do you have time to translate it at all. I don't have time at the minute. Even if you could clarify the actual date of birth that would be helpful. I just skim read.
Thanks - only if you have time.

Re: Calogero Messina_1869-1871 Birth Mystery
Birth No 106 – Calogero Roseto
Registered Menfi on 20 March 1869
Appearing was Leonarda Palminteri, daughter of Audenzio, 54 yo, Receiver of the Foundlings,
living in Menfi, who presented a baby boy to the official, who she declared had been presented
on the day 19 March at 10 am in the house of the wheel, in Via Montelione, No 650, born from unknown parents, to which baby was given the name of Calogero and the surname of Roseto.
No other detail were given about the baby or what he was wearing. The other names there are the witnesses to the birth registration and presentation.
Left Margin Annotation indicates that Calogero Roseto son of Francesco Messina and Girolama Tripoli was legitimised 3 October 1884, when they married.
On the right side of the next page I am understanding that the mother had previously recognized him as her “natural” son (Act of Recognition) on 2 September 1879 – and I'm understanding his name was changed to Tripoli? Not sure. (That wouldn't make sense because then his name would've needed to be changed again? - Thinking out loud here. (That’s the gist, I can’t quite catch all the words so may need some tweaking or a complete retype. It also says something similar at the bottom of Francesco and Girolama’s marriage record.)

I would like to thank everyone for all their time and effort on Calogero.
This information all seems to fit him like a glove.
Waited 15 years (1879) to claim a Natural birth for Calogero ? Then Legitimize the boy in 1884.
Any indication to confirm Francesco was the Natural Father ??
Both Girolama's Parents passes away in 1853-& 1855 --- no shame to family
Girolama passed in 1891.
Both Franceso's parents passed away 1872 & 1877-------" "

Yes, at the base of the marriage record it says that they had a child born to them from their “natural union” so I am understanding that he was the father. It does seem strange that she waited until 1879 to recognize him, and also giving him her surname?, but maybe the year is also an error like the year of his birth was, but as the birth record was annotated shortly after the event, I imagine it is likely correct. It’s too bad that the notarised deeds arn’t on line. I checked the Part II entries just in case but nothing there. It's also puzzling that they waited so long to marry.
