Vincenzo Caputo + Mary Bruno

Over 25 million Italians have emigrated between 1861 and 1960 with a migration boom between 1871 and 1915 when over 13,5 million emigrants left the country for European and overseas destinations.

Vincenzo Caputo + Mary Bruno

Post by CaputoBruno »

Good Afternoon Everyone,

I also posted this in the Italian Genealogy Forum

I am reaching out to our community in the hopes that someone can help me connect the dots in my family history.

I am currently on a quest to trace my great grandparents, Vincenzo (James) Caputo and Mary Bruno. My grandmother, Rose Caputo, was born on January 21, 1916, at 730 Jay Street in Utica, Oneida NY. Interestingly, there were several Caputo family members residing on Jay Street during that time, some even in the same building at 731 Jay, suggesting a familial connection.

However, my efforts to find Vincenzo (James) Caputo and Mary Bruno living together in the 1920 census have been fruitless so far. I have obtained my grandmother Rose's SS5 from the SSA, which confirmed her father's name as James Caputo, linking the dots further. Their place of birth is listed as Italy, but the specific location remains unknown.

One intriguing piece of the puzzle is the midwife listed on Rose's birth certificate, Carmella Cappello, who lived on Mohawk Street, literally just one block away. This could potentially suggest a closer tie between the families.

One clue is the ages listed on Rose's birth certificate. If accurate, Vincenzo would have been born around 1880, and Mary around 1897. Despite having certified birth records for everyone in our family line up to our great grandparents, I have hit a wall in finding out what happened to them.

To all Caputo and Bruno families who had members in Utica during that time, I am reaching out for any assistance or information you might have. Your help would mean a lot to me in piecing together our family history.

Thank you.

Robert

It appears that Mary Bruno immigrated to the United States in 1910. We believe her birth year was 1896, so she was 13 or 14 years of age. Where would I locate potential immigration records. There cant be that many Mary Bruno's that came from Italy at that time? Thoughts

A couple details that were left out after digging through records:

Bruno is her maiden name.
She had my grandmother with Vincenzo Caputo in 1916 (Utica NY)
She then married Gordon Conklin (Conkling) in the early 1920's (PA) but lived in NY
She always went by Mary Bruno and her obituary lists Mary Bruno Conkling (Berried in Herkimer NY)

1930 census lists 1910 is when she arrived. She was still Alien status in 1930.

Her fathers name was John Bruno (Giovanni)

@Darkerhorse I did not see your post with the image for some reason. hmm that record is interesting. Do we have any way of checking in Isolo Cope Italy to see if there is a birth or marriage record that could perhaps contain Vincenzo. etc. It states that she was never in the US

Sorry I should have said...it states that she had never previously been in the US. This could be a record of interest. Does anyone have access to Birth, Marriage, etc. records in Isolo Cope
