Hi Angela, thanks again for the help! I found 5 more kids, Federico, Filomena, Clorinda, Guiseppa and Concetta. I won’t ask you to translate their records.

Great!!! Well done you. I thought there might be a few more. I'm happy to translate them for you, but what you might want to do is just use one of my translations as a guide/template and extract the vital info from each record and I could check them for you. I'm busy tomorrow but there's always lots of good people here to take a look for you. :)

Take care.

HI Angela, I have a question. I notice on some birth records, the child is given multiple middle names. Was this common practice for people who were wealthy or from a prominent family?

Good question. I'm not sure about that. Maybe someone else can weigh in. In my history I have both contadini and "well-to-dos" and I'm sure both used two to three names when registering their children. The names appearing after the first written given name were not considered middle names. Any of the given names written on the birth record may have been used e.g. someone given the names Anna Rosa Maria may have then been known as Rosa or Maria and not necessarily Anna. Hope this helps a bit.

This is something I've noticed. Yet, there's no rule. However, I've found records with up to 20 names for the child, and always for children of prominent people.

Are the extra names those of grandparents or other relatives perhaps? Is there a naming tradition?

When you find so many names, it's usually a devotion to particular Saints. You may sometims find the particular saint mentioned. I mean something like Francesco di Paola (vs. Francesco d'Assisi) or Luigi Gonzaga (vs. Luigi of the French)
