Help with Interpreting Grandfather's Ruolo Matricolare

Post by Peter Atkinson »

I have successfully translated most of my maternal grandfather's Ruolo Matricolare but have some questions about his actual date for joining the army.

I also need helping figuring out how to upload to this site an image I have of his record. The file is too large to simply attach. Do I need special permission of some sort to do this?

My grandfather was Pasquale DeRose and he was in the 1st class category of the Cerisano (Cosenza) Liste di Leva for 1888. He returned from Canada (Toronto) to honour his conscription obligation. He was originally in the 1887 Liste di Leva but was reassigned to the later class due to an interesting circumstance that involved a younger brother born in 1888 who claimed an exemption from the draft.

My first question is - Which of the following dates indicates when he actually enlisted?

On the List di Leva, his enlistment date is given as May 25, 1908.

However, a line on his Ruolo Matricolare reads: 'Ascritto alla ferma di due anni (legge) - 6 luglio 1908', which I interpret as meaning he was mandated, on July 6, 1908, to serve in the army for two years. I assume this means he was granted a grace period for reporting for duty, perhaps in recognition of the fact that he was returning from overseas. Does that assumption make sense?

The next line on the Ruolo Matricolare reads: 'Giunto alle armi - 26 gennaio 1909', which I interpret as 'Called to arms' on January 26, 1909.

He was then assigned to the 2nd Regiment on February 4, 1909.

It seems a lengthy gap (6 months) between his reporting for duty and his call to arms. Does this mean he simply presented himself for examination on July 6, 1908 and carried on a civilian life until January 26, 1909?

Or was he actually enlisted on July 6, 1908 and then assigned to basic training and then, perhaps, reserves of some sort until January 1909 and the call to arms?

I would appreciate any help on my queries.

It is usually better that you post a LINK to the record, and not the actual record (as you say, size is in issue.)

I think that Peter is facing with image upload. Help him this issue. I'm also face the similar problem. I don't know how to upload a photo. I click on the image icon on the function tab and I only get Image
