Surname Aloi, Elia, Alai Help

Post by Faye_Alley »

I'm hitting a road block. I've been searching for the records for my GGF for about 2 hrs. His name is recorded as Domenico Aloi (1887) on the Manifest of the ship he came on. However I may have found a link to a Domenico Elia married to a Maria Vona. I've also found some commonalities with a Domenico Zingerelli and Maria Alaia. Either way his parents should be in the 1860s block. His birth city may be Petilia Policastro Calabria or Naples. He applied for citizenship 3 times before his early death and it varied on his paperwork.

I've matched with numerous people of Italian decent and no one has been able to help.

Can you also post the link to or the image of the manifest?

Yes, that is the manifest I found indicating he was from Laureana.
There is a Laureana in Salerno, and also in Reggio Calabria.

Could this be your Domenico?
WWI alien registration in Johnsonburg, PA?
Birthday listed as 22 July 1888 in "Loirana Reggio Italy"

***
THIS WWI registration looks to belong to the Domenico Ally for whom you posted the Petition for Naturalization above in Kentucky.

I've found different info on different forms. I've narrowed it down to 2 possible cities Petilia Policastro Calabria and Laureana.... His birth year also changed on different documents it's either 1887 or 1888

Unfortunately, there are missing years in the online records for Petilia Policastro (1887-1891)
https://www.familysearch.org/search/fil ... cat=785012

https://www.familysearch.org/search/cat ... %20Library

Also, there does not appear to be the surname ALOI in Policastro.

For Laureana (Reggio Calabria)
The surname does appear.
For the year 1888 I located a Maria Teresa Aloi - born to Francesco Aloi and Isabella Fiaschi.
Also, a son Pasquale born in 1886 to the same couple. (#72)

Any names sound familiar?

You can find birth records at the Antenati site.

This MAY be your Domenico - born in 1887.

The birth act is from the hamlet of Bellantone, which is in/part of the comune of Laureana di Borello.

#34
Dated 23 July 1887 - birth on 22 July 1887 at 7:30 AM
Father: Domenico Antonio Aloi, 30, peasant farmer residing in Bellantone
Mother: Mariantonia Morano, peasant farmer, his wife, residing with him
The child was born at home in Via Porta Laureana #12, and given the name Domenico Aloi.

There is an annotation in the margin of a marriage with Fortunata Digiglio(sp?) on 10 November 1912. I will search for that record.

EDIT TO ADD:
The online records end in 1904.
You can write directly to the town for the marriage age.
Send your photo ID and an email address for communication.

Fortunata.... it's not that Domenico isn't the correct person from what i could tell; they had a few kids that i couldn't tie to my Domenico later, but it's not impossible. There's also a similar Domenico from Caulonia and I know that one isn't correct. But those 3 are the ones I've narrowed down date wise.

My ancestor came over in 1906 and was married 3 times.
2nd wife was Ida Meade Hall (who was married 1x before). 1st wife was Mattie Elliott (died 1927); 3rd wife (my GGM) Dorothy Day (married 1936).

I have an entire time line after he first showed on the Kentucky census in 1920 but the 14yrs before that are lost. So it's possible he was married before in that. And I've been searching for those 14yrs of missing time. After 1920 I have him locked in and know everything about him. Anything before that tho has been impossible

I will Def deep dive into him tho too, thank you for all your help.....lmk what else you may find. If anything.

It is possible that you cannot find some evidence of him before 1920 because he traveled back and forth...
Look for additional arrivals. They may give you a clue.
Assume nothing when looking them over. :-)

I will continue to search as well.

Here is the marriage of the above Domenico Antonio Aloi and Mariantonia Morano in Laureana di Borello 0n 29 January 1885.

Domenico is age 27, unmarried, farmer, son of deceased Domenico; and of [living] Carmela Cognetta.
Mariantonia is age 23, unmarried, farmer, daughter of Giuseppe; and of Annunziata Gatto.

You may want to keep this record IN CASE this is your line...
