Hello! Can someone help with the translation of this marriage record from Marsala, Sicily? I have attempted to translate the document myself there are parts I'm not sure are correct. It is the first record on the page

My translation below:

In the year one thousand nine hundred and twenty-one, on the twenty-eighth day of April, at nine and twenty minutes, in the communal house of the Municipality of Marsala, open to the public.

Before me Fici Dallar Saverio cassare delegated with deed on the fifteenth of November, already approved by the Civil Status Officer, dressed in official form, personally appeared:

1. Arini Pasquale, unmarried, twenty-two years old, bricklayer (mason), born in Marsala, resident in Marsala, son of Vincenzo, resident in Marsala, and Gallo Maria, resident in Marsala

2. Vita Gandolfo, unmarried, eighteen years old, housewife, born in Marsala, resident in Marsala, daughter of Vincenzo, resident in Marsala, and Arini Francesca, resident in Marsala; who asked me to unite them in marriage; to this effect they presented me with the document described below; and from the examination of this, as well as of those already produced at the time of the request of the publicans, all of which, equipped with my visa, I insert in the volume of attachments to this register, proving to me that there is no obstacle to the celebration of their marriage, I have read articles one hundred thirty, one hundred thirty-one and one hundred thirty-two of the Civil Code to the spouses, and therefore I asked the groom if he intends to take Gandolfo Vita here as his wife, and if she intends to take Arini Pasquale here as her husband; and having each responded in the affirmative to the full understanding of the witnesses indicated below, I have pronounced in the name of the Law that they are united in marriage.

Present at this event were: Graffeo Leonardo, aged thirty, owner, and Caito Pietro, aged forty-two, blacksmith, both residents of this municipality. I'm not fluent enough in English to say if it's all correct, but some sentences and words don't seem to flow to me; they seem very literally translated.
For instance "Dressed in official form" means "in his official role".
However, if you have any doubt about the actual meaning, feel free to ask.

I've made some changes but may need some tweaking. I agree with Pippo that the translations appear very literal (and because of that they don't really flow and for those who arn't use to reading Italian civil records, some of the content in the translations might not make a lot of sense). What I do with my own translations, is put them in my own words.

Interesting, why are you undertaking full translations for each of your records?

The couple went to the Town Hall on 20 March 1921 to declare their intentions and make their request. You can see at the base of the record that it states that the parents gave their consent for them to marry.

The final marriage bann was posted on 6 April.

There is some added information in the record about the parents:

Vincenzo Arini was 52 yo, and a contadino (peasant/farmer), and his wife Maria Gallo was a casalinga, no age given.

Vincenzo Gandolfo was 55 yo, carrettiere (carter driver/Carrier) and his wife Francesca Arini was a casalinga, no age given.

Between both of your translations this flows well. In English I would write the dates in the last paragraph as follows

The document presented is the certificate of the publications carried out by me on the two Sundays, the first on twenty-seven March (March twenty-seventh) and the second on three April (April third) of the current year.

I like to have the complete translation so I can understand the document as a whole. It is all quite interesting to me. In this case these are first cousins who married. Do you know if this is something that would have been looked into or asked prior to the marriage?

You are very welcome for the help. We don’t usually translate the complete document/s unless someone specifically asks, so it’s been a good exercise.

Re the dates, I know that in the US the dates are generally written as month day year, while in other countries it is written as day month year, so just beware that when you see either a marriage or death annotation on an Italian birth record, that if the date is written for example “died 5.8.1895” that this means 5 August 1895 not 8 May 1895. Sometimes, people get caught out with this. (You won’t though.)

Re marrying first cousins, I know that it happened, especially in Southern Italy. I have at least one cousin who married her first cousin, but she had immigrated when she married. My friend who is from Naples has cousins who have married their first cousins. Maybe Pippo can chime in as to whether being first cousins was ever considered an obstacle/impediment to a couple being married. If it was, I don’t recall coming across this before. I’d say it probably wasn’t encouraged.

Good on you for finding the allegati for the marriage. They can be a real gold mine for us family historians.

Regarding cousin marriages in Sicily, dispensation was required from the diocese for marriages of second cousins or closer until the early 1900s. Dispensations were apparently not difficult to get, as there were numerous marriages requiring dispensations. Marrying first and second cousins was not at all uncommon. The geneticist Luigi Luca Cavalli-Sforza did a great deal of study on the subject. In his paper Consanguinity, Inbreeding and Genetic Drift in Italy, 2004, he researched the percentages of first cousin marriages in Italy. Very interesting information regarding first cousin marriage. I was surprised when I found this in my family tree research but have also found several others on the Sicilian side of my family. Now I see on that map and based on your comments it was not as uncommon as I thought
